@beanyzilla Lets put it to a relatable level - The Hannibal TV show was a big bold swing that I *know* people raised eyebrows about before it came out. No it's not Anthony Hopkins, it's not Silence of the Lambs. It's a new interesting take that breathed some life into a mostly dead IP.

Opinions are subjective but nobody out there will be able to convince me that the new Resident Evil won't be absolutely perfect in translating the game to film.

@beanyzilla The problem with this example is we got multiple live action Chris Redfields and fans ragged on those movies. I personally just think people need to be more open to the possibility that it's cool to see a new thing, see where that takes you before jumping immediately to hate.

@beanyzilla On top of that, I've become so tired of the constant barrage of negativity online that I'm choosing to actively fight back against it. So that's why in this specific instance, I am not sanctioning these folks hating on something that isn't even done cooking, so to speak.

@beanyzilla Like so many things, nothing is black and white. I've been a fan of Resident Evil for nearly 30 years. Unlike a lot of those fans we're talking about, I'm incredibly open to them trying new things and it doesn't hurt that it's from a director I trust. That's just how I see it. +

@beanyzilla I have a lot of words for fans that dismiss something that isn't directly connected to canon but I mainly boil it down to thinking those so-called fans need to grow up and try to explore the medium a bit. Those games and those stores will still be there when the movie ends.

@Busiris I think if I was a Resident Evil fan who was deeply invested in the canon characters I would be disappointed, but probably curious. But as someone entirely removed from but has a lot of respect for the franchise, it looks like a neat exploration of the larger universe.

How funny (sad) that "Towards the Future" is the better show but it seriously looks sourced from a VHS or something, whereas "The Ultimate Hero" is not very good but appears to be gorgeously restored in high def. Sigh, lmao.

Feels like it's been so long since the last major disc release for Ultraman media. This is one I've looked forward to, as Ultraman Great is some of the last remaining Ultraman stuff I haven't watched in full. A release full of English language Ultra hero shenanigans, wild stuff!

I think more recent media has acted as a counter-movement to that trend; the newer Superman, Project Hail Mary, and more have shown a social hunger for emotional authenticity and embracing vulnerability and hopecore. In theory, my generation is perfectly primed for Ultraman!

My coldest take is that Ultraman isn't bigger in the US bc it's rooted in reckless love & emotional vulnerability (the latter in part just bc it's Tokusatsu, a medium where ppl can go 'but I can see the wires/seams/etc").
We're raised to dismiss/dislike those things as Cringe.
