This is what I meant when I said AEW reclaimed New York.
In 2021, there very much was a “Fuck the Fed” vibe in the audience, and not only did that dissipate over the next three years, the crowds in Queens and Newark got colder, and sparser. I was on escalators with fans at the 2023 Newark Collision going “L-A KNIGHT, YEAH”. Fans chanting “MAMI” at Bud Matt. Offhanded conversations from fans around me asking who the wrestlers in the ring were and talking about what was going on in WWE. WWE won back the hardcores and New York was theirs again. People were just going to AEW shows here because they happened to be here. When AEW ran Chicago after Survivor Series 2023 the looked so small time and like the uncool brand.
Conversely, as I’m getting out the 7 train today, the first thing I hear is a little boy explaining to (his dad?) why AEW was better than WWE, in stadium boos for a mention of the Rock, multiple Fuck TKO chants on stairs, escalators, and crowd that was excited to watch wrestling.
Noted vibe shift today, felt like the result of everything that’s happened over the last year. Potential 97/98 big 2 situation going on at least from a vibes standpoint. I’m just calling what I’m seeing.

I'll say that this nyc crowd felt closer to a true AEW crowd than previous trips to NYC. Tonight's crowd was a far cry away from the crowds that would do LA Knight or Rollins chants at dynamite tapings. #AEWDoN
