We’ve just observed two Dark Green Fritillaries on the Coldean Lane Wildflower Meadow. That takes our species count up to 24, about 65% of the total number of butterflies found in the Living Coast Biosphere Reserve. Not bad for a former lawn which is only the width of two houses.

A bilaterally symmetrical gynandromorph of the Cleopatra (Gonepteryx cleopatra) and because this was in a sexually dimorphic species we could see this clearly. Stills from a video seen in the uplands of Corfu Wedenesday 19th June 2024.

Corfu Butterfly Conservation (CBC) is going to employ its first CBC Project Officer, working in partnership with the Ionian Environmental Foundation, the Capodistria Museum and the Rothschild Foundation. The signing for this agreement took place on Wednesday 24th 2024.

In winter 22-23, we managed Purging Buckthorn on the Liz Williams Butterfly Haven in three ways:
1) Cut it down to the ground.
2) Cut off the canopy leaving the stem/trunk of the bush.
3) Leave the entire bush intact.
The Brimstone caterpillars preferred 3 - the intact canopy.

Special Branch tree nursery informed me that my good friend Lucy Williams had 50 hawthorn to donate to the Liz Williams (Lucy’s mother) Butterfly Haven.
These were delivered and I planted them in the haven during my lunch break today.
