#HamOnt Over the last year, we’ve had some very real and difficult conversations in Hamilton about the challenges facing young people in our city.   We’ve seen heartbreaking incidents involving youth violence. Through the Community Safety Summit, we heard directly from families, educators, frontline workers, community organizations, and young people themselves about concerns related to mental health, addiction, trauma, isolation, and the growing need for support. One thing has become very clear: we need to do more for our youth. Too many young people are carrying struggles they shouldn’t have to carry alone.   Yesterday, Council approved my motion to formally request the province establish a Hamilton Youth Wellness Hub in collaboration with local youth-serving organizations and community partners.   A Youth Wellness Hub would create a safe, welcoming and inclusive space where young people can access the support they need - including mental health and addictions services, peer support, education and employment resources, and other community-based programs, without barriers. Every young person deserves to feel supported, connected, and to know there are people and places they can turn to before they reach a crisis point.   What gives me hope is that Hamilton already has incredible organizations, advocates, youth workers and community leaders doing this work every single day. This motion is about bringing people together, building on the work already happening in our community, and advocating for the provincial support needed to make a Youth Wellness Hub a reality in the @cityofhamilton

A night with friends ahead of @foodallergyfund summit We had dinner at @NobuRestaurants For most people, that’s just a great night out. For my dear friend @AllergicLiving editor, Gwen Smith, it’s something much bigger. She is allergic to shellfish, peanuts, and soy, which has historically made Japanese cuisine nearly impossible to navigate safely. A few years ago, during a previous Food Allergy Fund conference, we took a chance on Nobu. What happened next is something I wish every restaurant understood. They didn’t focus on what she couldn’t eat. They focused on what they could safely prepare. They were thoughtful about cross-contact. They were confident, kind, and collaborative. And the food was extraordinary. That experience stayed with us. Because when a restaurant gets it right for someone with food allergies, it’s not just a meal, it’s trust. And trust drives behavior. We come back. We bring our families. We celebrate milestones there. We recommend it to others. In my own family, when there is something to celebrate, this is where we go. When we travel, we search out Nobu restaurants because we know this is a restaurant that takes my son's allergies seriously. There is a real business case here that often gets overlooked. People with food allergies and their families represent millions of customers making careful, intentional dining decisions every day. When they are treated with care and respect, they don’t just dine, they become loyal, repeat customers. This is an opportunity. We need to shift the narrative from “burden” to “business value.” From “what we can’t do” to “how we can serve safely and well.” Because inclusive hospitality is not just the right thing to do, it is also good business. And that is true both on the ground and in the air. Food for thought this wednesday night.

Would you please also let us know which lu’aus accommodate food allergies? People are always asking…as this is a ‘Family’ and ‘Accessibility’ issue affecting 32 million Americans and 3 million Canadians. Mahalo!

@worldallergy For those of us advocating for anaphylaxis risk reduction measures, it would be very helpful to have a public statement available stating food allergies to be a chronic medical condition. Thank you.

FARE | Food Allergy Research & Education@FoodAllergy

"Owen is four, and his first allergic reaction happened when he was just seven months old. We gave him yogurt puffs, something that seemed harmless and common for babies. Within minutes he began vomiting. At the time, we assumed it was just a reaction to a new food. Soon after, we tried oatmeal. Again, he vomited. We wondered if his stomach was just sensitive as he was beginning solids. Then came the moment that changed everything. One morning we gave Owen French toast. Shortly after eating, he began struggling to swallow. It was terrifying to watch your baby suddenly unable to manage something as simple as swallowing food. That moment began our journey into the world of severe food allergies. Today, Owen has life-threatening (anaphylactic) allergies to dairy, eggs, wheat, and peanuts. He is also sensitive to several other foods, which makes introducing new foods extremely complicated and stressful. Because of the severity of his allergies, Owen has never eaten at a restaurant. Every meal requires careful planning, label reading, and preparation at home. Something as simple as grabbing lunch out or sharing a birthday cake with friends carries risks that most families never have to think about. Food is supposed to be joyful, especially for children. But for families like ours, it can feel like navigating a minefield. We carry emergency medication everywhere we go and constantly worry about accidental exposure. Despite these challenges, Owen is an incredibly happy, resilient little boy. His allergies have taught our family to advocate, educate others, and appreciate the small victories—like finding a safe food he enjoys or watching him confidently navigate a world that isn’t always built with kids like him in mind. Food allergies aren’t just preferences or mild sensitivities. For children like Owen, they are life-threatening medical conditions that shape everyday life. Our hope in sharing his story is to help others understand the seriousness of food allergies and to create a safer, more inclusive world for children living with them." -Brittney Submit your story for a chance to be featured on an upcoming #FAREsundaystory: bit.ly/3WNio3g

@Kidsdoc1Rick @DrDougMackMD Hi there! First generation antihistamines are essentially not indicated for anything. This medication was HC approved a long time ago, not re-evaluated despite pleas of physicians to remove this or at least make it behind the counter.... rant following...

Why is this still on pharmacy shelves? 2nd generation antihistamines like Claritin are safer, longer acting and more effective. If it’s in your home throw it out. @DrDougMackMD @PedsAllergyDoc
