CARMA Opens 2026 Howard “Howie” Zucker Grant Program Applications for Thoroughbred Aftercare Organizations CARMA is pleased to announce that applications are now open for the 2026 Howard “Howie” Zucker Grant Program, which provides funding to nonprofit aftercare organizations dedicated to the care, retraining, rehabilitation, and rehoming of retired California-raced Thoroughbreds. As CARMA enters its 18th year of service to California racing and Thoroughbred aftercare, the organization has successfully placed more than 500 Thoroughbreds through its Placement Program and awarded more than $6.8 million in grants to approved aftercare organizations. In 2012 Believe You Can took Rosie Napravnik to the winner’s circle as the first female jockey to win the Kentucky Oaks. She went on to win a second time with Untapable in 2014 and became the first woman to win multiple Breeders’ Cup races. CARMA is proud to announce that applications open tomorrow, May 1st, for the 2026 Messineo Makeover Scholarship, supporting Thoroughbred trainers and riders preparing to compete in the Retired Racehorse Project’s Thoroughbred Makeover. Now entering its second year, the scholarship was established through the generosity and legacy gift of Nancy Messineo, whose passion for Thoroughbred aftercare and retraining continues to impact horses long after their racing careers end.
