A tourist was seriously injured Friday evening after being thrown 8 feet into the air by a bull bison in Yellowstone National Park. Professional photographer Mike Macleod filmed the incident and said the bison was "angry, agitated and charging anything and everything." (No audio)

If America is only an idea, then there is no specifically American people to preserve. Because “being an American” simply means believing in a set of policy positions.
But of course, the newcomers who supposedly move in because they agree with those policies still get to retain an older identity that predates their new one, because the new one was never a concrete identity to begin with. It was merely an ideological skinsuit.
Meanwhile, everyone else in America who was born here, whose ancestors were from here, and who have no other place to call home, don’t get to have any identity of their own beyond the ideological skinsuit itself. They’re stuck with the assertion that to be an American is to be ideological. And so they’re forced to always think in ideological terms in order to affirm their own claim to belonging in the very country their family came from.
This is a recipe for disaster long term. It almost forces endless ideological wars within the country itself because we have redefined what being an American is to mean adhering to a certain set of political propositions.
Which means that disagreement over those propositions immediately devolves into a fight over what it means to be an American itself.
The stakes are too high for all sides. To lose means to become stateless. So the pressure just builds and builds and builds until eventually, someone actually IS rendered stateless. A people reduced to an ideology will eventually be dispossessed by the ideology itself.
