Connected Africa Summit
Africa’s next chapter will be defined by the policies we shape, the systems we build, and the connections we create today. This is not just a normal conversation nor is it just another convention. It’s coordination at scale. It’s nation-building one connection at a time.

Transforming Higher Education into the Engine of Kenya’s Digital Economy Today, I delivered a presentation at the Vice Chancellors’ Summit,Mombasa on accelerating digital transformation in higher education to advance the Government’s ICT and Digital Economy Agenda. It was an honour to engage university leaders at this high-level forum, chaired by Prof. Daniel Mugendi Njiru, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Embu and Chairman of the Vice-Chancellors' Committee. The summit was graced by the Cabinet Secretary for Education,Prof. @MigosOgamba, and the Principal Secretary for Higher Education and Research, Dr. @Bettymuganda17. Kenya’s digital transformation journey has been deliberate and bold. From expanding broadband infrastructure and strengthening digital public infrastructure to deepening e-government services and positioning Kenya as a regional innovation hub, we are witnessing structural change in how government, business, and citizens interact. The Digital Superhighway is taking shape. At the heart of this transformation must be our universities. From Classrooms to Enterprises Globally, the most successful economies were built on strong university innovation systems. Stanford University powering Silicon Valley KAIST driving Korea’s industrial transformation Massachusetts Institute of Technology catalyzing advanced technology industries Tsinghua University supporting China’s deep-tech ecosystem These institutions do not only produce graduates; they produce companies, patents, and industries. Kenya must build similar models. Our campuses must evolve into startup ecosystems, applied research centres, commercialization platforms, and innovation labs addressing national challenges. Universities should nurture ideas into enterprises, research into products, and talent into globally competitive innovators. Innovation must move from theory to practical solutions for Kenyan and African challenges. We have begun rolling out enhanced connectivity programmes for universities to ensure reliable broadband for research, digital learning, AI development, and startup growth. Connectivity is foundational — but it is only the beginning. Higher education must guide the country’s development trajectory by aligning curricula with digital economy needs, driving applied research in AI, cybersecurity, cloud computing, and semiconductor design, leading digital policy thought leadership, and strengthening industry partnerships. On electronic manufacturing, universities must advance local capacity — from chip design and embedded systems to IoT prototyping and hardware innovation labs. By strengthening engineering faculties and fostering industry collaboration, we can build a competitive electronics manufacturing ecosystem. Equally critical is high-quality talent. The digital economy runs on skills. Universities must produce problem-solvers and creators capable of building scalable enterprises and exporting services globally. If we get higher education right, we secure the future of Kenya’s digital economy. The call is clear: Universities must become anchors of innovation, engines of enterprise, and architects of Kenya’s technological transformation. The future is digital — and our institutions of higher learning must lead the way.
