Yesterday, #AB2417 was signed into law! We thank @GavinNewsom for acting to protect youth rights and @PhilTing for championing this bill, as well as our hardworking coalition. With the state DJJ closing, incarcerated youth can now know and defend their rights in the new system.

The new California Youth Empowerment Commission is now accepting applications from youth ages 14-25 to serve as commissioners.
The Youth Commission was created by my bill AB46. Youth across the state will be selected to serve.

Would some juvenile facilities post rights info and the ombudsperson phone number if there wasn't a law requiring it? Probably.
But probably not at the facilities where youth need it the most.

A #YouthBillofRights already exists in CA law, but it only applies to youth prisons. CA needs to protect these rights in county youth facilities. #AB2417 will give incarcerated youth across CA a bill of rights so they can be safe, protected, and empowered.
