On August 11, Swanton Sector Border Patrol agents apprehended two individuals after they illegally entered the United States in an extremely dangerous and reckless manner by driving a vehicle down active railroad tracks in Vermont.   Thanks to swift coordination by Swanton Sector dispatchers, agents intercepted the vehicle and arrested both occupants. Further investigation revealed that the occupants were citizens of the United Kingdom who are suspected of being associated with an organized criminal fraud group. Both individuals were charged and convicted for illegal entry and are awaiting removal proceedings. The vehicle was also seized for forfeiture.   This incident exemplifies the very real threats posed by people with malicious intent who attempt to illegally enter our country to exploit and victimize our citizens. Scams, cons, theft, and fraud are just some examples of what their possible intensions may have been.   We strive for what the American people deserve, a safe and secure border.

Swanton Sector Border Patrol Agent assisted the @ATFHQ with an investigation and recent arrest of a Jamaican national who attempted to purchase a firearm in Vermont while being an illegal alien.  He has been charged for allegedly lying about his immigration status on application forms to purchase the semi-automatic pistol and faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted. This case demonstrates the importance of interagency collaboration as well as the importance of enforcing federal immigration laws. Border security is national security and directly correlates to public safety. To read more about this case from the @USAO_VT below. ⬇️

I want to take a moment to share an important update regarding the ongoing investigation into the tragic loss of Border Patrol Agent David “Chris” Maland. Since his passing on January 20th, this case and investigation have been a top priority for Swanton Sector, the FBI, and the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), as well as numerous other law enforcement agencies. Yesterday,  a federal grand jury returned a superseding indictment charging the suspect for the murder of Chris Maland and the DOJ has authorized and directed the District of the Vermont to pursue capital punishment for this heinous crime. The loss of Agent Maland has deeply impacted the Newport Station, Swanton Sector, and the whole Border Patrol family. These recent developments reflect the justice system’s vigorous and relentless commitment to holding those responsible accountable for their actions. Agent Maland’s sacrifice will never be forgotten, and we continue to honor his memory as we move forward together. Read the full statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Vermont ⬇️

A tip from a concerned citizen on July 31st led to the arrest of 6 citizens of India at the Plattsburgh, New York bus station who had illegally entered the United States from Canada. During the investigation by Champlain Border Patrol Agents, it was determined that they had illegally entered the U.S. through the woods in the middle of the night and were waiting in Plattsburgh to catch a bus to New York City.    Thanks to the public’s watchful eyes, they boarded transportation, but it wasn’t to NYC; it was to an immigration detention facility to await their deportation proceedings.  We thank our vigilant community members for their dedication to securing our borders. Please continue to report suspicious border activity in Swanton Sector by calling 1-800-689-3362. Your call matters!

In a blatant disregard for their safety, a citizen of Bangladesh attempted to smuggle five people by concealing them on the floor of his minivan without seats or seatbelts during an alien smuggling event in October 2024 near Fort Covington, New York. This reckless act underscores the severe dangers associated with human smuggling, which is a federal felony. Human smuggling and illegal immigration are NOT humane and are NOT victimless crimes. The Bangladeshi smuggler and now convicted felon had previously held a valid student visa in the United States. In July 2025, he was deported back to Bangladesh. The Swanton Sector remains steadfast in its commitment to targeting and criminally prosecuting smugglers and ensuring the removal of individuals who violate our immigration laws. Border security is national security which directly correlates to public safety.

In June 2024, Swanton Sector agents apprehended 3,310 individuals entering the U.S. illegally. One year later, in June 2025, that number dropped to 119 apprehensions from 24 different countries. Despite the significant decrease in cross border apprehensions this still represents a serious threat to national security. Border security is national security, which directly correlates to public safety. Please report suspicious border activity in Swanton Sector by calling 1-800-689-3362. Your call makes a difference!
