𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐖𝐓𝐈 𝐜𝐫𝐮𝐝𝐞 𝐨𝐢𝐥 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬 declined by US dollars 6.49 per barrel and US dollars 5.82 per barrel, respectively. 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤𝐥𝐲 𝐀𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐖𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐋𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐑𝐚𝐭𝐞 increased to 9.79 per cent compared to the previous week. During the week, 𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐲 𝐁𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐲𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐝𝐬 remained broadly stable in both the primary and secondary markets. Year to date 𝐝𝐞𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 of Sri Lanka rupee against the US dollar was 3.6 per cent as of 08 May 2026. 𝐓𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐬 stood at 135,643 and 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐬' 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 amounted to US dollars 767.9 mn in April 2026. 🌍 𝐒𝐫𝐢 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐚'𝐬 𝐄𝐱𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 – 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 Sri Lanka's 𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭 recorded a 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐩𝐥𝐮𝐬 in March 2026 despite a widening of the trade deficit and a moderation in the services surplus compared to a year earlier. The current account surplus was supported by higher workers’ remittances and a lower primary income deficit. Accordingly, the cumulative surplus reached 𝐔𝐒$ 𝟓𝟑𝟏 𝐦𝐧 during the first quarter of 2026. 📦The merchandise trade deficit widened to US$ 2.3 bn during the first quarter of the year. Notably, fuel import expenditure surged by 74.7% in March 2026 on a yoy basis. 🚗Cumulative vehicle imports during the first quarter of 2026 stood at US$ 613 mn. 🏝️ 𝐓𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐦 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫 showed signs of moderation, with tourist arrivals declining to 𝟏𝟖𝟑,𝟗𝟕𝟗 in March 2026, partly due to geopolitical developments in the Middle East. Tourist earnings were estimated at 𝐔𝐒$ 954 𝐦𝐧 in the first quarter of 2026. 💸 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐬' 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 increased to 𝐔𝐒$ 𝟖𝟏𝟓 𝐦𝐧 in March 2026 with notable cumulative growth in Q1 of 2026. 📈 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 in government securities recorded a 𝐧𝐞𝐭 𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐟𝐥𝐨𝐰 of 𝐔𝐒$ 𝟔𝟒 𝐦𝐧, while the CSE recorded a 𝐧𝐞𝐭 𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐟𝐥𝐨𝐰 of 𝐔𝐒$ 𝟏𝟎 𝐦𝐧 in March 2026. 💰 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬 𝐎𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐬 stood at 𝐔𝐒$ 𝟕.𝟎 𝐛𝐧 at end March 2026 (covering 3.8 months of imports). 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐦𝐛𝐨 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐱 𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 accelerated to 5.4 per cent in April 2026 reflecting the spillovers from the ongoing war in the Middle East, particularly the significant upward adjustments in domestic energy prices. In March 2026, 𝐏𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐬' 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐱 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲, as reflected by the Total Activity Index, expanded on a month-on-month basis. During the period from 27 to 30 April 2026, 𝐜𝐫𝐮𝐝𝐞 𝐨𝐢𝐥 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬 increased mainly due to continued closure of the Strait of Hormuz, restricting global oil supply. 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤𝐥𝐲 𝐀𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐖𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐋𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐑𝐚𝐭𝐞 for the week ending 30 April 2026 decreased to 9.57 per cent. 📊 𝐏𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐬' 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐱 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 — 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 📍Sri Lanka’s 𝐏𝐌𝐈 – 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 (Total Activity Index) recorded a value of 57.1 in March 2026, indicating that construction activity continued to expand, though at a slower pace compared to February. 📍Industry participants highlighted a more challenging business environment, citing limited availability of fuel and raw materials, increasing costs and logistical disruptions linked to the conflict in the Middle East. 📍The 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐎𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐱 continued its expansion trajectory, supported by a robust flow of projects. 📍Both the 𝐄𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐲𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐱 and 𝐐𝐮𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐱 recorded further growth, indicating that companies continued recruitment and material purchases despite prevailing challenges. 📍Some firms increased stock levels in anticipation of future price hikes, while suppliers were more cautious in releasing materials. 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤 In March 2026, National Consumer Price Index based 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 accelerated to 2.4 per cent. Food and Non-Food inflation recorded 0.7 per cent and 3.8 per cent, respectively. During January to February 2026, 𝐭𝐞𝐚 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 recorded a year-on-year increase, mainly attributed to the favourable base effect. In contrast, 𝐫𝐮𝐛𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 recorded a year-on-year decrease during January to February 2026. On the sidelines of the International Monetary Fund–World Bank Spring Meetings 2026, the Sri Lankan delegation engaged extensively with the international investor community. Key engagements included an investor seminar organized by J.P. Morgan, investor meetings hosted by Jefferies Emerging Markets Team and HSBC. In addition, the delegation attended a meeting with private sector representatives and officials from the U.S. Government, hosted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. At these fora, the Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe, provided updates on recent improvements in macroeconomic conditions and addressed questions from participants. The U.S.–Sri Lanka Commercial Working Group was soft-launched at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, with the objective of strengthening bilateral commercial ties and promoting investment between the two countries.

On the sidelines of the IMF–World Bank Spring Meetings, the Governor of the @CBSL, Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe, met with the Governor of the @RBI, Shri Sanjay Malhotra. The Governors exchanged views on the current macroeconomic conditions in their respective countries, with particular emphasis on the impact of the Middle East crisis and the policy measures undertaken to cushion the effects of this global supply shock. Discussions also covered efforts to promote Indian rupee based settlement for trade and tourism.

The Governor of the @CBSL, Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe, met with the Governor of the People’s Bank of China, Dr. Pan Gongsheng, on the sidelines of the IMF-World Bank Spring Meetings 2026. The Governors discussed about escalated geopolitical tensions, and Governor Weerasinghe briefed Governor Gongsheng on recent economic developments in Sri Lanka, including emerging challenges stemming from heightened tensions in the Middle East. While appreciating the continued engagement between the two central banks, the discussion also underscored the potential benefits of promoting renminbi‑denominated settlements for trade between China and Sri Lanka.

IMF Managing Director, Dr Kristalina Georgieva, congratulated Sri Lanka on reaching a staff-level agreement for the combined fifth and sixth reviews under the Extended Fund Facility and reaffirmed the IMF’s continued support for Sri Lanka’s efforts towards durable economic recovery and sustained progress. During discussions, Deputy Managing Director (DMD) of the IMF, Dr Kenji Okamura, commended the progress achieved by the Sri Lankan authorities despite significant global headwinds and domestic challenges.
