For Brain Awareness Week, here's a fact often left out of the conversation: psychiatric drugs work by chemically altering brain function; they are not like insulin for diabetes correcting a known, measured deficiency. Long‑term use can bring serious side effects, including emotional blunting, withdrawal reactions, and risks of violence or self‑harm in some individuals. Our History of Psychiatry museum in Clearwater shows how these drugs were sold to the public and what every patient should ask before agreeing to take them. Visit cchrflorida.org for more information.

Brain Awareness Week is about understanding what helps – and what harms – the brain. Electroconvulsive "therapy" (ECT) delivers hundreds of volts of electricity through the skull, risking memory loss and brain damage. Our museum's audiovisual displays document how electroshock has been used, often without truly informed consent, and why many consider it a human rights issue, not a treatment. Come see the evidence for yourself at the CCHR Florida Center, 109 N. Fort Harrison Ave., Clearwater – admission is always free.

During Brain Awareness Week, we cannot ignore what's happening to children's brains. Millions of U.S. kids, including infants and toddlers, are prescribed psychiatric drugs despite serious, sometimes fatal risks. CCHR's work in Florida helped expose that 55% of foster children had been placed on powerful psychotropic drugs, prompting reforms that cut prescriptions for children under six by 75%. Parents can learn how to protect their child's developing brain by touring our museum and attending free workshops on rights and alternative solutions at the CCHR Florida Center in Clearwater.

Brain Awareness Week reminder: there is still no objective brain scan, blood test, or lab marker that proves any psychiatric "disorder." Yet millions are told they have lifelong brain diseases and are placed on powerful mind‑altering drugs that change brain function, not "correct" a proven defect. Our History of Psychiatry exhibit in Clearwater walks you through this history so you can make fully informed decisions for yourself and your family.

Brain Awareness Week starts today, March 16–22 – a global campaign to build support for brain health and brain science. At CCHR Florida, we believe true "brain awareness" also means knowing how psychiatric drugs and invasive procedures can damage the brain and rob people of their quality of life. Visit our free "History of Psychiatry" museum in downtown Clearwater to see how brain‑damaging treatments have been marketed as "medicine" and what your rights really are. #brainhealth#mentalhealthawareness#humanrights
