@wychstreet I think another thing there is Christopher Hewitt, who had acquitted himself well for no less than Mel Brooks, seemed to have good comedy chemistry with Uecker. For Uecker, that part was a cinch; he seemed to have chemistry with everyone he met.

You can't teach timing. You can become more proficient with it - sometimes the key to the laugh is a fraction of a pause, and this can change - but you need years in front of audiences to develop this. Uecker might have had the best natural timing of anyone I've ever seen.

@dick_nixon Used to watch late night Belvedere reruns in college. It was very comforting. Most former athletes are wooden when they try acting but he was a natural. Would never have known he was a former pro. His delivery and timing would have you think he was an actor first and foremost.

John Inman & Mollie Sugden are justly legendary - but if Frank Thornton fails in that role, the show doesn't work. Everything revolves around him. The script hinted Captain Peacock was the rare middle-class twit who knows he's a phony, & that's how he played it..

In the Paramount commissary, probably during a break in the filming of "Horse Feathers" (1932) - Clockwise: Chico, Maurice Chevalier (CHEVALIER!!!), producer Herman Mankiewicz, Groucho, Harpo, and Noel Coward. For the record, Groucho's head was rarely translucent when I knew him.
