Every staff has game goals. Negative plays. Takeaways. Explosives. 10+ play drives. Third-down stops. But there’s a difference between putting them on a board and tracking them while the game is still being played. @CoachIrsik1 talks about the value of knowing those numbers in real time, because they can inform the next call. Your game-day analytics person doesn’t have to be another coach on staff. For Kegan Wirtz, it was his wife, Madelyn. She didn’t come in with a football background. This is one of the biggest things I’m thinking through as I get back on the sideline this fall. We all chart the game. Down and distance. Field position. Fronts. Pressures. Coverage. Results. But after a series, I don’t have five minutes to sort through it. I have to talk to the QB, check in with the OL, process what the defense is doing, and get ready for the next call.
