While political tensions may exist, it is encouraging to see that the British Monarchy can still play a crucial role in the maintenance of cordial relations between Britain and the United States. We with His Majesty The King our best for his state visit to the US in late April.

In his writing and public contributions, he has made the case for constitutional conservatism on the British left, arguing that the nature of the UK's constitutional tradition can help advance a socialist programme.

He is also a leading voice in debates on the British constitution and has co-edited two major collections on this subject: Sceptical Perspectives on the Changing Constitution of the United Kingdom (Hart, 2023, with Yuan Yi Zhu) and Strengthening the Political Constitution.

Dr Richard Johnson is a Senior Lecturer in Politics at Queen Mary University of London, with research that focuses on both US and British politics and history.

The calibre, intelligence, and genuine experience of most hereditary peers far exceeds that of the average MP. Charlatans are evicting Parliament's finest.

This is a total misunderstanding of the constitutional role of Parliament. Our system was never intended to be dominated solely by party politicians. The Commons represents the people, while the Lords has historically reflected the wider institutions and power brokers of the nation - the Church, the judiciary, the aristocracy, and independent expertise. Hereditary peers provide a living link to our history and bring an independence from the narrow tribalism of party politics. That continuity has long been a unique strength of our parliamentary system, not a weakness.
