As we close the year, we give thanks for hard-won victories for environmental protection. This year tested us with communities across the Philippines enduring environmental and climate disasters, while defenders continued to face attacks. Yet through collective action, we persisted. As we move toward 2026, we will bravely fight on with renewed hope and unity. We look forward towards greater solidarity with fellow Filipino environmental advocates!

[Statement of CEC on environmental plunder under the first three years of Marcos Jr. Administration] Three Years of Plunder: Marcos Jr.'s People-Last Environmental Agenda The Center for Environmental Concerns (CEC) condemns the environmental plunder and greenwashing during the first three years of President Marcos Jr.’s presidency. Upon deeper analysis, our organization, along with environmental advocates, gives Marcos Jr. a failing grade. The Marcos Jr. administration is using environmental rhetoric to support harmful policies that benefit businesses. They present land reclamation as a flood control solution, portray large dams as answers to climate issues, and depict large-scale mining as a means of development. However, these initiatives prioritize profit over people, causing environmental damage and displacing communities. To advance these projects, the government is cracking down on dissent. Environmental human rights defenders (EHRDs), development workers, and local communities face ongoing threats, including harassment, false accusations, and militarization of areas targeted for so-called "development." Instead of safeguarding the environment and its defenders, the government prioritizes corporate interests [1]. FLOODED BY CLIMATE INJUSTICE ⛈️ [CEC - Philippines’ Statement on the ongoing floods caused by typhoons Crising, Dante, Emong, and intensified Habagat] The Center of Environmental Concerns - Philippines calls for a proper and swift disaster response from the Philippine government, in light of the widespread flooding and ongoing heavy rains caused by typhoons ‘Crising’, ‘Dante’, ‘Emong’ and the intensified southwest monsoon (habagat) across the country, particularly in Metro Manila and most of Luzon. In a nation that has long been among the most vulnerable to the impacts of the climate crisis, we can no longer accept just “climate change” as an excuse for poor disaster response. Heavy floods are often described and reported as “natural disasters”, yet there is nothing natural about them. They are a manifestation of climate injustice: the long-running prioritization of profit over communities and environments, which accelerates climate change or reduces our capacity to mitigate or adapt to its impacts. Internationally, the top polluter countries and corporations must pay corresponding to their contribution to the loss and damage suffered by Global South countries like the Philippines. On the other hand, the Philippine government must also be accountable for enabling and implementing the wholesale environmental plunder that has destroyed our natural defenses to floods, especially in the form of quarrying, large-scale mining, mega-dams, and reclamation projects in our critical watershed areas and coasts. While we help each other overcome the ongoing floods through relief programs and donation drives, we must also call for climate justice. As the President’s State of the Nation Address nears, it is high time for the administration to answer to its negligence, inaction, and complicity in the ongoing environmental and climate crises. CEC stands with communities in demanding compensation for loss and damage, genuine solutions that tackle the climate crisis, and an end to environmental plunder and corruption that continues to flood our country.
