📢Shape Europe’s Future Bioeconomy Strategy! CELLFIL is collecting insights from companies working with bio‑based raw materials and products to understand industry needs and expectations around the proposed EU Bioeconomy Strategy (2025). We invite you to participate in a short 10-minute anonymous survey (until 31st March). Your input will directly contribute to a policy brief for the European Commission, supporting a stronger, more competitive, and more circular bioeconomy in Europe. You will help: 🔸 identify key opportunities and barriers for scaling bio-based innovations 🔸 guide future policy measures that support industry growth 🔸 highlight real-world needs around investment, sustainability, and regulation 🔸 strengthen Europe’s transition toward a circular, resilient economy Your experience matters! link.webropolsurveys.com/Participation/… #Bioeconomy #CircularEconomy #Sustainability #HorizonEurope

💡Did you know that filament yarns form the basis of many high‑performance and premium textiles? In contrast to staple fibres, filaments are continuous fibres, giving them unique material properties and design possibilities. @CELLFIL_EU explores the production of Lyocell filament from alternative feedstocks such as orange peel, demonstrating how waste streams can be transformed into high‑quality cellulose filaments. From silky dresses and sportswear to protective gear, performance materials, and technical composites, filament yarns are used wherever strength, smoothness, and controlled performance are required. Why filaments matter in textiles: 🔸High strength & durability: Their uninterrupted structure enhances tensile performance 🔸Smooth, uniform surfaces: Ideal for fabrics with low pilling and a clean, consistent appearance 🔸Excellent drape and sheen: Continuous filaments create textiles that flow, shine, and feel refined 🔸Precision engineering: Filaments enable tailored properties for fashion, technical, and industrial uses Find out more about CELLFIL👉cellfil.eu #Science #SustainableTextiles *The image was generated with Canva AI

💡New EU study sheds light on the unintended effects of circular economy policies in the textile sector. While the transition to a circular system is essential, poorly designed policies can have unintended social, economic, and global impacts. Understanding these effects helps ensure innovation supports truly sustainable and equitable textile transitions. Therefore, @CELLFIL_EU is not only developing cellulosic alternatives, but is also assessing environmental and systemic impacts across the entire textile value chain to inform evidence‑based policy frameworks. Key insights include: 🔸The risk of increased waste exports 🔸Loopholes that undermine sustainability goals 🔸Uneven social impacts from price changes 🔸Public resistance when convenience drops The study calls for: 🔸Early and inclusive stakeholder engagement 🔸Stronger use of combined macro + micro modelling 🔸Behavioural and social science integration 🔸Consideration of bold, resilience-based scenario 👉Read more environment.ec.europa.eu/news/exploring… #CircularEconomy #EUPolicy #CEActionPlan @REA_research @OpenResearch_EU @HorizonEU

🌍Celebrating the International Day of Women and Girls in Science (11 February) To the incredible women of @CELLFIL_EU : Thank you for driving our mission forward every single day! According to UNESCO’s The Gender Gap in Science: Status and Trends: 🟠Young women pursue higher education at higher rates than young men (46% vs. 40%), yet women still represent only 35% of science graduates 🟠Women remain underrepresented in research, with only one in three researchers worldwide being a woman 🟠Progress is happening: women are moving toward equal representation in academic and public-sector research, though men continue to dominate research roles in the private sector across most countries #WomenInSTEM #WomenInTech

👕Jenni, one of the @CELLFIL_EU´s researchers from @AaltoUniversity, participated in the CIMANET Research Seminar, where she presented her work on Consumers´ Awareness and Perceptions of Textile Material Origins. "Consumers increasingly care about what their clothes are made of, yet their understanding of where common textile materials originate remains limited. Reactions to orange peel‑based textiles range from curiosity to caution. Seeing my research resonate with both academia and industry is truly motivating, as it contributes to the broader transition toward sustainability." The event brought together CIMANET doctoral researchers, industry representatives, research and technology organizations, and public‑sector actors to discuss developments in Finland’s bioeconomy sector. 👉Check out more zenodo.org/records/185380… #SustainableTextiles #TextileMaterials

📢🧵New @CELLFIL_EU publication on sustainability indicators of Man-Made Cellulosic Fibers is out! 👉Read more cellfil.eu/why-better-dat… MMCFs are promoted as a sustainable alternative to polyester and cotton, but are we evaluating their sustainability holistically as production scales up? The short answer is: Not yet Based on our findings 🟠Most studies focus on environmental impacts through LCAs 🟠TEAs are fewer but repeatedly flag high pulp costs, energy use, solvent recovery, and capital needs 🟠And social sustainability? Largely missing. Although indicators like energy, water use, resource efficiency, and chemical recovery appear across all three dimensions, no study fully integrates them in a single framework. If MMCFs are going to play a meaningful role in the future of sustainable textiles, we need better-aligned sustainability indicators and more integrated LCA-TEA-social assessments. #Innovation #Textiles #LCA

👕♻️The European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) has published a preparatory study that will shape future EU product policy for textiles, feeding into Ecodesign requirements, EU Green Public Procurement, and revised EU Ecolabel criteria. The study looks at textiles across their full life cycle and identifies where policy can best improve durability, repairability, recyclability, and transparency, in line with the EU Strategy for Sustainable and Circular Textiles. Importantly, these instruments are analysed together to ensure coherence and real market impact, not overlapping rules. #SustainableTextiles #TextileIndustry susproc.jrc.ec.europa.eu/product-bureau…

📢 16th January - International Nothing Day! At @CELLFIL_EU, we blieve that “nothing” doesn´t need to be an absence, but it can be a promise: 🍊NOTHING accidental: Our science-driven Lyocell filament design ensures that it behaves exactly as intended throughout its entire lifecycle. 🍊NOTHING untested: Our processes undergo rigorous validation to guarantee prototype performance and recyclability. 🍊Zero waste, maximum flavor #HorizonEU #CircularEconomy

Scaling up lab-scale inventions into market-ready solutions isn’t just about technical feasibility; it’s about economic viability too. In CELLFIL, techno-economic analysis (TEA) plays a crucial role. Researcher Tooba Qureshi is leading efforts to ensure that bio-based solutions are not only environmentally sustainable 🌱 but also economically competitive 📈. TEA combines process modeling and cost analysis to answer critical questions: ✅ Is the technology competitive in the market? ✅ What are the capital and operating costs? ✅ How do design choices influence the speed of commercialization?
