"There is a risk that the virus could become endemic in the Americas, presenting challenges for managing continuing risks to poultry and wildlife in Canada, and increasing the potential for spillover to humans."
NCCEH | CCNSE@ncceh

🐔 Avian influenza A(#H5N1) and the continuing outbreak ▶ ncceh.ca/resources/evid… While the risk to humans remains low, the persistence of the outbreak globally, and unprecedented spread among birds, wild mammals, and domestic pets suggests the need for continued vigilance.

Avian influenza H5n1 on five (!!) fur farms in Finland. Apparently no control measures except “ people need to be carefull”. Astounding. We do not learn from the past. GUESS WHAT: passaging wildly may generate mammalian adapted h5n1. Not good…. ruokavirasto.fi/elaimet/elaint…

I'd guess there's an outbreak in urban birds in Poland. Multiple cases in multiple cities for what we're considered a rare event is disconcerting. Is this a unique event, are things changing or have we just missed these in the past? Time (and surveillance) will tell. 2/2

More on the H5N1 avian flu situation in cats in Poland. 9/11 tested cats were positive. Positives were from 3 cities, so this wasn't just a point-source event. That's a key part of the story and one we need to look at more. 1/2 wormsandgermsblog.com/2023/06/articl…

A few more thoughts about the report of a possible outbreak of H5N1 avian flu in cats. Big questions: - Were these actually H5N1 ? - Was this one event (e.g. a bunch of cats exposed to the same source) or multiple spillovers? 1/2 wormsandgermsblog.com/2023/06/articl…
