@docbrownchem When you say AQA won't accept averages, what *are* they expecting? Do they expect the students to identify the individual ox states of the different S atoms, as you do on your website?

Its an average of +2 (0 and +4) and +2.5 (0 and +5), but I gather the UK AQA exam board would not accept averages for an answer. I've done my best to analyse the situation at #6.10" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">docbrown.info/page07/redox2.… I'd appreciate any comments +or - !!!

@docbrownchem It's +2 and +2.5 isn't it? I tell students that 2.5 is the *average* ox state of the S atoms, they aren't all the same (actually also true of the thiosulphate, it just so happens the average is an integer, so less controversial) which serves the purpose of counting the electrons

If you were asked what is the oxidation state of sulfur in the thiosulfate ion and the tetrathionate ion, what would say?

@docbrownchem No isomerism in AP Chem. No organic at all, in fact!

In UK A level & US grade 12 AP chemistry, drawing 3D mirror image diagrams of E/Z & R/S isomers is expected. Are all pre-university students expected to indicate which is (R)-... and (S)-... via Cahn-Ingold-Prelog priority rule, as I'm just working on some new isomerism diagrams

@RogersHistory I co-wrote a textbook. Worked so hard to explain concepts with clarity. It went through so much editing. BUT also wrote loads of end-of-chapter questions and had to cut them down by more than half because they wouldn't fit on the assigned two-page spread. Publisher priorities!

Booklets - what’s wrong with textbooks? If it’s a money thing, I totally get it, but if a huge amount of time and teacher resource is going in to creating booklets from scratch when textbooks are already available?

@Jo_Moore_Sci In my experience, trust yourself and what helps the kids. We chopped it up to help learning, but also made it explicit how what we taught fits to the spec, so keen kids could make sense of it when pulling it together during revision. Good luck! Happy to offer advice in future.

@CFCoatesDXB Yes. I did mean ks3 until Xmas. I would like to chop up the curriculum order more, but this is about all I'll be able to do at the moment. I just want to make sure there isn't any glaring obvious reason why it wouldn't work to reorder it a little that I might have missed.

Chemistry gurus... We've had a few issues this year with launching straight into structure and bonding at start of year 10. Is there any reason- I am perhaps missing- why we couldn't bring the first few lessons of chemical change and the first bit of quant forwards?? ...1/
