The best thing you can do is to ask direct questions/use direct language. Using "harm yourself" instead of "suicide" may not get you a clear answer. Asking these questions will not put the idea in someone's head, and makes it more likely that someone will be honest. (2/3)

Learning the warning signs for suicidal ideation can make a difference! Warning signs include changes in behavior like withdrawing from preferred activities and loved ones, eating or sleeping more or less, extreme mood swings, and more. (1/2)
