"Well, one part of the dub is the brain. So it's a living God. And the other part is the heart. Our brain, and our hearts. So you start from the drum. The drum is the heartbeat." Happy Birthday Lee "Scratch" Perry born 20 March 1936

@OrangeryThe Yes I see these artists who are probably seen as being relatively milk toast & know that they were often deeply weird. I've loved Tristano for a long time. He always sounds to me like a deeply thoughtful friend, maybe not a close friend but one with a valuable perspective

"When I had all my instruments, I had to play them all, so I could not concentrate on one. I was playing the piano before I could remember playing the piano. 'Come on motherfucker,' I said to myself, 'give it up and play one.'" Happy Birthday Lennie Tristano born March 19, 1919

@OrangeryThe Also I think there's an intellectual component to her that no one has ever wrapped their mind around - obviously w the quote you highlighted. I feel her as an intense mind on fire in search of knowledge & expression. She wasn't a folk waif. She was a hard core spiritual historian

@OrangeryThe She was SO forceful. With the scraps we have of formal & informal recordings. But also she was so real in that she knew her (or anyone's) real power is in the room w the rest of the people who've agreed to be there together

@CHTCTR That's right. In another time, another place, (another dimension?).... who knows what would've happended. She shone brightly though.

For the third interview in the Bill Orcutt Guitar Quartet series, I talked with Ava Mendoza about her itinerant childhood, her family’s mining history, her growth as a guitarist, singing in Spanish, her upcoming solo album on Burning Ambulance, and more ✨

“Back then there were these ingredients: fingerstyle, blues, swing, heavy rock, no wave. I didn’t know how to do them together fluidly, and as the years have gone along, I just don’t think of genre in the same way.” —Ava Mendoza @misterminsoo goes long with Ava Mendoza

@TracesofTexas Saw Ray Price at One World Theater in Austin on 9/25/09. He was 83 & had recovered from surgery earlier that year. It was one of the best concerts I've ever seen & his voice was one of the greatest instruments I've ever heard

Traces of Texas@TracesofTexas·
Traces of Texas reader Troy Schultzmann kindly sent in this nice photo of Tammy Wynette "standing by" the great Ray Price, who was a Texan and the possessor of one of the greatest country singing voices ever. Ray was born on a farm near Peach, Texas in rural Wood back in 1926 and died at the age of 87 in 2013. Some of his well-known recordings include "Release Me", "Crazy Arms", "Heartaches by the Number", "For the Good Times", "Night Life", and "You're the Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me," but probably his biggest impact was propelling the country beat from 2/4 to 4/4, known as the "Ray Price Shuffle", which helped make country music more popular. "I played a lot of dances in Texas. I heard people's feet shuffling on the floor and I figured that would make a real nice beat, and we worked it out and it came out great," Ray said later. He was right! One of my big regrets is that I never saw him live. I don't even have a good excuse because he was still performing into his 80s. I am listening to Ray's greatest hits right now and I think "For the Good Times" is my favorite Ray Price song, but that may change as more songs play. What's yours?

"I started with a snare drum to get the feel and sensitivity of using the Drum Sticks to relay my inner spirit. So whenever you hear my drumming it's ME talking to YOU. I try to keep the grooves simple, funky, danceable, Chunky and Loose." Happy Birthday Harold Brown 17 Mar 1946

Big Mama Thornton and many more known and un-known Artists. Then one night the spirit came to me and said, 'Why don't you just do it?' Well from that night forward everything I did was to live my dream to be a professional Drummer."

rn I have stuck-tune syndrome with the Bee Gees "Nights on Broadway" and I'm struck by two things: 1) lyrically it's kind of a creepy stalker tune 2) that slower, sadder bridge is absolutely gorgeous and also starts to eerily forecast Beach House imo youtube.com/watch?v=5wRM-t…

@GodsFossil @maxime_drdn Thank you. What is more rewarding than seeing my album here is seeing Dredd's. That's a blessing. I've tried to spread the word about In Quest Of Tense for the past 32 years. I know it's not all me but I hope I have helped!

@JasperWillems6 Yes & also if they understood journalism means going out in the community & reporting on what they find vs sitting back & only reporting on the bands that publicize themselves

if all music journalists reported on their local scene, music journalism would be in a better place. we need to amplify voices straight from the soil. not via generously paid third parties.

@billorcutt Loved this. I'm one who found HTRT beautiful & emotional. Immediately I understood the gospel/&/vs/crooner thing & what's so affecting to me is that in the past voice/strings were meant to sanitize, bleach, difficult emotion, HTRT turns that on its head
