Thread 1/n: My kids and I were horrified at our recent visit to New York City’s American Museum of Natural History @AMNH . It was mindboggling, after the carefully curated exhibitions at the New-York Historical Society down the street. Is this a museum or a time-capsule? Why are

It was such an honour for me to co-convene and host this great discussion on museums and decolonisation within the context of neocolonialism. Finding Afro-centric solutions to African issues is definitely my priority. A big thank you to Regartless formerly known as Sysy House of Fame team and management for giving me the opportunity to support this initiative. Read more here regartless.org/a-view-in-to-r…

@HopNApple @corinne_fowler It only applies if you are talking about people of Indigenous, African, Asian, or Latin American descent collectively. Such as if you were commenting on their shared experiences of colonialism or racism. Such generalisations should be used sparingly, but they have a purpose

@CHTNUK @corinne_fowler Global majority? Which racial or ethnic group exceeds 20% of the global population? Never mind the 51% required to make this accurate. We just lumping them all together now? All whites and all non-whites? Weird.

For reasons well known, the category "white" is also a 'singular grouping' which does not draw the same ire... More thoughtful language will always be up for healthy discussion but asking qs about habitual terms shows that it's being reflected on. I remember loads of common terms from the 70s that we'd avoid like the plague nowadays

Disgusting to see the @nationaltrust using this sort of language. The use of the term "global majority" to lump together everyone who is not "white" as a singular grouping is one of the most racist, ignorant, divisive and patronising examples of virtue signalling.

@corinne_fowler The term itself can be empowering in the right context such as when taking a global perspective, but I don't think it is necessary here to generalise (and homogenise) such a small number of people

@corinne_fowler "Global majority" has a place but only makes sense to me if these participants are not British nationals. Its use in this article is clunky and unclear, and it does problematically assume race as a defining characteristic without explanation

As heritage workers, we have a social justice responsibility to stand against the ongoing genocide of Palestinians that is being committed by the State of Israel and enabled by its allies, including the UK Government. Sign our petition at chng.it/pXwtr25dHv

Been to the @Soc_of_Authors EGM and I’m disgusted, angry, disillusioned … the resolution wasn’t even demanding anything radical; just a statement of solidarity with Palestinian writers and literary institutions/orgs. What’s the point in a Trade Union that is so conservative?

Shocked and ashamed that my trade union, @Soc_of_Authors has today voted *NOT* to issue a public statement, not even a mild one, related to Israel’s ongoing slaughter of the Palestinians. Specifically.. 1/

How disappointing. And disheartening. The @Soc_of_Authors members vote against a resolution to make a statement re the killing of fellow writers, the destruction of Palestinian cultural institutions in Gaza. And to call for peace. 786 members for: 883 against. How very sad.
