A key transformation for the pharma industry is that while we were once primarily retailers, we are now creating innovations of our own. A recent example made possible with the active support of the Government of India is the development of Naphithromycin, the first-ever indigenous antibiotic, highly effective in treating resistant respiratory infections. Today we are exporting preventive healthcare. We must find value addition, and that comes from innovation. We should focus on innovation and increase our spending on R&D to become a global power in pharma by 2047. Sustainability is a composite of environmental responsibility and health equity, which is a resilience strategy. Companies, to be better positioned and remain globally competitive, must invest early in climate-smart operations, renewable energy, greener processes, and responsible supply chains. Equitable access in pharma is equally important for defining long-term sustainability. There are three ways in which access becomes a sustainability accelerator: partnerships with government to address public health issues, industry and peer-led partnerships to expand access to healthcare, and affordability mechanisms for patients for access to drugs at a larger level.
