Hun Manet's Press Freedom Day Message Reads Like a Warning PM Hun Manet released his statement for the 33rd World Press Freedom Day on April 30, built around this year's theme, "Building a Future of Peace." The message praises journalism as a "strategic partner" of the government, then spends most of its length explaining why restrictions on the press are not restrictions. He writes that information security, keeping national secrets in times of crisis, and managing "press order" do not limit press freedom. They guarantee it. The Ministry of Information's own 2026 survey, he says, shows press freedom in Cambodia is improving. Manet credits journalists for their role during what he calls Thai military aggression on Cambodian territory, citing their work spreading "true information" from official sources to counter narratives about the border. He then turns to journalists who use press credentials to cover up illegal activity or serve "groups with intent to harm the nation," describing it as a betrayal of professional conscience and unforgivable. His five recommendations to the Ministry of Information include drafting more press laws, taking legal action against people "hiding under the press label," and strengthening information diplomacy.
