Went to write about @IndStBasketball coach Josh Schertz’s offense. Asked him about playing tennis as a child. He ended up telling me a story even his best friends in the sport do not know. Honored to tell it. theathletic.com/5238989/2024/0…

In and out today giving blood for #TeamSteph in 45 minutes. Blood drive in KC area runs through tomorrow. If you live in area and are able, hope you’ll give.

A few years ago I wrote about my friend Stephanie Fajkus, who at the time had just had brain surgery, which followed multiple heart surgeries. A-not-so-awesome update: Three weeks ago she was diagnosed with leukemia. If you live in KC, we’re holding a blood drive…

Part two of my conversation with Bill Self is on how he sees roster building in 2026, his vision for his current KU roster, NIL budgets and portal losses: nytimes.com/athletic/72960…

@JAndrew_Cochran I think KJ could have been part of a lot of different successful builds. He was the starting center for a 1 seed. But yeah, pieces didn’t exactly fit and top-end talent wasn’t there you need to win a title.
English

@CJMooreHoops Depth AND top line talent issues. Again, he’s too nice and loyal to ever throw anyone under bus ( and shouldn’t, 2/3 were great student athletes and people) but let’s be honest, his core three just wasn’t good enough to build around
English

@JAndrew_Cochran But I’m with you that the ceiling was still lower than most of his teams of the past. Like I said, had real depth issues.
English

@JAndrew_Cochran If you use Torvik and include up to when Kevin misses first game then after, they’re 16th-best team, then 27th. I think it’s reasonable to think that team probably gets to Sweet 16 if he’s healthy. Maybe it finds its groove and KMc helps Furphy play better in last couple months.
English

@JAndrew_Cochran He doesn’t consider 2024 in same bucket as 2025. Thinks they would have had a chance to be pretty good if McCullar never gets hurt. That team had real bench issues but I can see his point.

@CJMooreHoops Good insight from @CJMooreHoops & Bill Self.

This piece has a really good discussion about how roster building has changed in college basketball and the different approaches teams can take.
It also highlights how talent is now more spread out than previously.

Have another Kansas story coming later this week.
For today, here’s Bill Self on retirement, why he’s back and how he views his future: nytimes.com/athletic/72892…

I sat down with Bill Self last week to talk about his retirement decision, why he’s back, how he’s feeling and how long he plans to go.

@CJMooreHoops Gutting. My word. And I’ve been through it also - but blessed. My next donation is for Steph. What a great friend you all are to be there for her & family - god bless 🙏

@KellisRobinett iPhone. Probably makes me still old though that I refer to it as my tape recorder.
