@pulte I’ll be missing an entire month of pay as I transition to a different school district for this upcoming year. I’m a teacher and I’ll be short about $4000 to cover my bills. 😞

@STEFisDOPE This is one reason I’m scared of being a teacher. We never know what will set a kid off and when we might find ourselves in a situation like this. I had a death threat against me last year. It’s scary times for teachers. And the most challenging it’s ever been in my career.

Really gotta ask yourself who is raising these kids. It’s time to have some uncomfortable conversations.

@wfaa I’d be curious to know how this would impact districts that already pay above the state minimum. Would they be required to increase pay even though they are already surpassing the minimums?

Teacher retention: if you want to keep the best teachers, treat them like they are the best. Few teachers leave an environment where they feel valued, supported, appreciated, and treated like professionals. This is more important now than ever!

@drdjbarbarella It will never be safe if that’s the goal your looking for. I am a teacher in a school of 2400+. Hardly any mask anymore. I stopped as soon as we could. I caught Covid for the first time ever this past week and it was very mild - like a cold, minor congestion for 5 days.

Covid cautious friends. Do y’all have a metric in your mind for when it’s safe to let the offspring take the mask off at school? Mine wants a point/line/place she can look forward to. Ugghhh😭 I mean, like we are getting any data at all… Ideas? Thoughts?

@sykor11 @MrZachG Actually I wish lower grades would bring back memorization skills. The words are not the end goal, the skills is. I teach 9th grade and can’t tell you how many students lack basic memorization skills that they NEED to be successful. Those start with memorizing Vocab in elementary

My daughter gets a list of words to practice for HW. I quiz her on them for five minutes. She goes to class and feels successful because she knows the words. The class can move forward. Everyone is happy. Why do people want to eliminate homework again?

@avalonsensei Apathy is at an all time high. There doesn’t seem to be a true desire for learning - more of just “I completed the assignment, why didn’t I get a 100?” mindset. Not understanding we grade for accuracy and mastery and not just rewarding for doing something-Instant gratification

@CJohnsonELA Totally understand it being a result of COVID if you’re seeing a large portion of students with this mindset. That’s really tough. 😔

This morning I had a student get mad at me that he doesn’t have an A because he “does the work.” He writes nonsense on a paper and ignores me when I try to offer help. He equates an A with complying/quantity of work turned in, not with understanding/quality of work turned in.

@teachergrind Year 10 here & while I’ve had some Ss like this, it has never been a majority. That is the difference & is certainly an effect of COVID grace…at least in my area. When the majority (85%) are like this in advanced classes, & were not so prior to COVID, the correlation is evident

@CJohnsonELA I have a number of students like this every single year of my career. I’ve been in the classroom since 2010. This is not because of COVID and giving grace.

@sweatystartup I don’t “give” HW. I plan plenty of class time for Ss to do work. Despite many redirections, some just don’t do it & goof off instead. So then, they have assigned themselves HW. If they don’t use class time wisely, they’re still responsible to finish it & that’s usually at home.

Homework doesn’t make any sense. They’re at school 7 hours a day and we have to send kids home with more to do?

@JayWamsted My largest classes are always the most chaotic. It’s hard to keep them all focused and on task. My largest this year is 33.

Don’t tell me that reducing class size won’t help student learning. Tell me you don’t want to pay for it. Tell me you don’t have the space. Tell me you don’t have the teachers. But don’t gaslight me. There’s a reason private schools cap class size. Every teacher knows it.

I don’t think a lot of people who went to college when it cost far less understand how many people are impacted by student debt. So I’m going to ask you to reply to show just a small amount of the scale of impacted people How much student debt do you have and how old are you?
