Idaho's considering AI chatbot safety laws now?! Parents can't tell their kid to put the phone down? We need the state legislature defining what a chatbot is allowed to say to your 14-year-old? And the bill is so vague that "reasonable measures" just means whatever the AI operator feels like doing until someone sues them (which only the AG can do, by the way, so good luck with that timeline). The part that actually should scare you though is that the second you build infrastructure to verify minors online, you've built infrastructure to verify everyone. That's not a slippery slope argument, that's Australia right now. They sold it as "protecting kids." What they actually built was a nationwide biometric ID system where adults hand over face scans to watch cat videos. Idaho wants to go that direction? All for a chatbot bill with $500k penalties that billion-dollar companies will pay without blinking, covering platforms that aren't even the ones destroying your kid's mental health? Instagram's still on the phone. Snapchat's still sending streaks at midnight. TikTok's algorithm still knows your daughter better than you do. But sure. Let's regulate whether a chatbot admits it's not human. Be the parent. That was always the answer.

In an alarming development, 40 state Attorneys General are urging Congress to pass the Kids Online Safety Act. KOSA would give the federal government broad control over how online speech platforms can be designed and operated, in a way that would never be tolerated for any other kind of media. FIRE urges Congress to reject this unconstitutional bill.

Republicans have no problem ignoring the Constitution as long as it fits their agenda. Think for a moment of how they would be reacting if the digital ID push was coming from the left.

@Eeveelight @radicalbarks Legally, it's enforceable. Technically, it's impossible. That's what should be alarming. These people are voting on policies they do not even understand. They are showing us their goal and that should be taken seriously and fought aggressively!

@radicalbarks @Eeveelight It is a VPN blocking mandate in the bill. Is it constitutional? No. When has that stopped lawmakers. Is it enforceable? We'll see.

@Eeveelight @CLADIESAMERICA So it didn't ban VPNs, it just insisted that sites would have to block them? Yeah, I can see how that would be completely unenforceable.

@radicalbarks @CLADIESAMERICA Apparently from the info I got from Grok, which I made sure was accurate, it mentioned that Adult sites had to enforce blocks on VPNs, which could’ve lead to a chilling effect to non adult websites. That part was removed and replaced with a toothless amendment.

@CLADIESAMERICA If you’re going to report this do it accurately, the VPN bans was removed from the bill yesterday, the bill is still bad yes but the VPN ban was removed.

@b80123191 One failed and one was adopted. They were mostly the same - a technical fix.

@CLADIESAMERICA The senate version removed the VPN rule. It’s still a disguise for Mass Surveillance and censorship. Teenage boys will find porn no matter what; it’s a force of nature not to be reckoned with; every mother knows that.

The States are running amok on this topic and it's getting very out of hand, SCOTUS or The Executive are going to have to intervene at some point.

Wisconsin looking to advance legislation banning VPNs. The moral panic is reaching all new heights with states considering authoritarian proposals to prohibit privacy-enhancing technologies. Policies usually reserved for China and Iran and now being endorsed by US lawmakers.
