So, looking at the satellite view of the intersection (link in comments), it appears that the semi stopped short of clearing the train tracks because vehicles illegally stopped in a marked zone on the opposite side of the tracks. The oncoming traffic had stopped in a way that blocked the semi driver from making his turn. The crossing arms were open, no lights were flashing, and the warning bells were silent when he began his move. He had NO indication of an oncoming train. Once the cab was clear of the tracks, the bells and lights (audible and visual warning) began, then the crossing gates closed on the bed while the semi was waiting for clearance to proceed. When the other trucks began to back up, it was because they realized the semi couldn't complete its turn without them moving out of the way. Though their collective retreat did save them from being smashed by the overturned semi truck and trailer, this was probably providence protecting them moreso than simply running in fear. You can also see that the semi is trying to advance while the trucks are all backing up. This, along with the placement of his right (curb) side of the cab across the white lines and his rear wheels clearly much farther to the left, indicates the semi driver was attempting a wide turn in an effort to safely clear the traffic. Moments before crossing, you can easily see just how WIDE of a turn he was attempting. But, when the lead vehicle in oncoming traffic is past his white line, and that vehicle is blocked by traffic stopped in a marked safe-zone that is designed to prohibit such a situation, and the drivers are all focused on the predicament instead of the solution, things like this collision can happen... And the semi driver is called an idiot at the very time he is trying to safely perform a dangerous move around others who are NOT following protocol.

With the audio on, I can tell that the lights (and bells) started once the cab was clear of the tracks. So, the semi driver clearly was not aware of the danger he just put himself in by stopping where and when he did. He was patiently waiting for those who were blocking his path to move so he could continue. The yellow markings at that awful intersection are probably there to help prevent an incident such as this.

The incident took place in Austell, Georgia, at the intersection of Austell-Powder Springs Road and US Highway 78. The semi-truck (hauling steel beams) tried a left turn across active railroad tracks but stopped with the trailer still on them—cab cleared, but the train hit the trailer and flipped the rig. No injuries reported.
