Less than two years ago, J.J. Spaun called up his college coach to ask if he knew of any jobs as a teaching professional. Now he's a three-time PGA TOUR winner 🏆🏆🏆 Spaun earned his first TOUR title at the 2022 @ValeroTXOpen, a triumphant moment in a journey defined by adversity from a young age. He was hit by a car while skateboarding at age 5 (thankfully suffering only minor injuries), and he was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 2018 after a lengthy period of feeling run down, before being correctly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 2021. Spaun played on PGA TOUR Canada and the @KornFerryTour before earning his TOUR card for 2017, and he regained his card via the 2021 Korn Ferry Tour Finals before earning his first Valero Texas Open title. A severe slump through early 2024 had Spaun questioning his long-term future in the game, but he fought back with a banner 2025 season that included a runner-up to Rory McIlroy at @THEPLAYERS and then his breakthrough title at the U.S. Open at Oakmont. He ascended into the top 10 on the Official World Golf Ranking, represented the U.S. Team at the Ryder Cup, and exceeded his realistic ambitions for his career. Yet earlier this year, Spaun experienced another downturn, perhaps a victim of suddenly sky-high expectations. He felt he was "going crazy" in working on his swing, and he arrived at the Valero without a top-20 finish on the season. He vowed this week to let go of those expectations, saying afterward that "my strategy was to not spiral." He didn't spiral. Spaun matched the low final-round score at TPC San Antonio, 5-under 67 in soggy conditions, for a one-stroke victory and his third PGA TOUR title. Just like that, the reigning U.S. Open champion is back in form. Spaun lives by a Confucius quote: “Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall." He has epitomized that quote once again.
