International Firefighters Day is observed each year on May 4 to honor firefighters for their service internationally and remember those firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice. DFPC encourages Coloradans to display a bright red or blue porch light at their homes during the month of May to honor firefighters across the state and the nation. You may also hear fire sirens during the annual “Sound Off,” which takes place at noon local time on the first Sunday of every May. Sirens will sound for 30 seconds, followed by a minute of silence in memory of, and respect for, all firefighters who have been lost in the line od duty or passed on before us. The Colorado Fallen Firefighter Memorial in Lakewood lists 172 names of firefighters who have died in the line of duty, both career and volunteer personnel. The memorial recognizes significant tragedies, including the 14 firefighters who died in the 1994 South Canyon Fire. Please join us in sharing your appreciation for the hard work and sacrifices our urban, rural, volunteer, and career firefighters have made to ensure our safety in Colorado. #dfpc #dfpcfire #FireYear2026 #cofire #coloradofire #firefighter #wildfire #wildlandfire #wildlandfirefighter #IFFD #iffdmay4 #FirefightersDay #HeroesInAction #InternationalFirefightersDay

#PoitreyCanyonFire update 7am 5/4/26 This will be the final update for the Poitrey Canyon Fire in Las Animas County. Fire management officials reported reaching 100% containment late yesterday. The DFPC Multi-Mission Aircraft (MMA) successfully guided firefighters to heat sources in close proximity to control lines, and crews made great progress patrolling and mopping up hot spots along the perimeter. DFPC will be working with Las Animas County and the local fire protection district to determine the timing of the transfer of command today. Most resources are being released; however, an engine will remain for at least another day to patrol and monitor before the arrival of a spring storm expected to bring widespread precipitation.

May is Wildfire Awareness Month in Colorado! Thank you to Governor Jared Polis for your continued support in encouraging people who live in the wildland-urban interface (WUI) to take action and mitigate wildfire risk to their lives, homes, and communities. Learning to live with wildfire must be a priority in Colorado, something we practice until living with nature becomes second nature. To protect our everything, we must make the necessary lifestyle changes now: take action, do the work, harden our homes, and adapt to wildfire. #PoitreyCanyonFire update 8am 5/2/26 There is no reported change in acreage or percent containment today, but more rain fell over the fire yesterday, limiting fire activity. Fire behavior was minimal and mostly smoldering, with pockets of creeping in drier fuels. Roads in the area were largely impassable, especially early in the day, hampering firefighters’ access to the fireline. Today, the DFPC Multi-Mission Aircraft (MMA) will be requested to gather intelligence on areas with residual heat, and crews will focus on building depth along containment lines. The number of personnel working on the fire has been reduced to 40, and resources continue to be released. Fire managers are developing a plan to return the fire to local control.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Thursday, April 30, 2026 Tracy LeClair (DFPC) | tracy.leclair@state.co.us | 970-841-9230 Eric Maruyama (Governor’s Office) | Eric.maruyama@state.co.us | (720) 916-2128 Division of Fire Prevention and Control Presents Colorado’s 2026 Wildfire Outlook and Preparedness Plan to Governor Polis Broomfield, CO – Earlier today, the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control (DFPC), along with state and federal partners, presented Colorado’s 2026 Wildfire Preparedness Plan to Governor Jared Polis. DFPC Director Mike Morgan discussed the 2026 wildfire outlook and provided an overview of state resources that are prepared to combat wildfires. “Colorado’s 2026 Preparedness Plan reflects our strong commitment to protecting our communities and forests, including the launch of our Mountain Pine Beetle Outbreak Task Force. We are helping our first responders have the tools needed to keep Coloradans safe, including a strong fleet of firefighting aircraft, dedicated ground suppression resources and engine crews, and real-time detection and fire behavior modeling. With these resources, Colorado is better prepared than ever to protect our communities 365 days a year especially in a challenging and dry year,” said Governor Jared Polis. “The 2026 Wildfire Preparedness Plan reflects the reality that wildfire is no longer a seasonal threat, but a year-round challenge that requires constant vigilance and a holistic strategy,” explained Director Morgan. “By integrating advanced technology like our Multi-Mission Aircraft and the FireGuard program for early detection with aggressive, rapid response, we are prepared to protect Colorado communities regardless of the calendar date. Our focus remains on keeping unwanted fires small and minimizing their impact on lives, property, and our environment through seamless coordination with our local, state, and federal partners.” The Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control consists of four sections, each serving Colorado’s fire community in a different capacity. From training firefighters to technological advancements in public safety, and from suppressing wildfires to building code enforcement, DFPC is dedicated to serving and safeguarding the people of Colorado and protecting our property, resources, environment, and quality of life. #PoitreyCanyonFire update 7am 4/30/26 The fire remains at 2,113 acres and 45% containment. Yesterday, cooler temperatures and higher relative humidity were reported across the fire, with the north side receiving precipitation. Fire activity was minimal and limited to interior pockets of unburned fuels. Additional heavier precipitation is predicted Thursday afternoon through Friday morning, which should further reduce fire activity. Fire management officials are working to “right-size” the incident and are releasing unneeded resources, including all aircraft and heavy equipment. There are currently 46 personnel working on the fire. There is no new map since the acreage and percent contained have not changed.

#PoitreyCanyonFire update 8am 4/29/26 The DFPC Multi Mission Aircraft (MMA) mapped the fire at 2,113 acres late yesterday, with no growth in the last 24 hours. Containment percentage has increased to 45%. A cold front is expected to bring a good change of wetting rain, with 1-1.5 inches predicted. This will help put a damper on fire activity but could create slick roads and hazardous conditions for firefighters working in steep, rocky terrain. There are currently 121 personnel working on the fire.

#PoitreyCanyonFire update 8am 4/28/26 Firefighters achieved 40% containment yesterday, and acreage remains at 2,113 acres. Cooler temperatures and cloud cover in the afternoon tempered fire behavior, which was limited to creeping along areas of unsecured fireline, and isolated torching in interior pockets of unburned fuel. Drier conditions are expected today, with a wind shift in the morning due to a passing cold front. Rugged terrain in canyons mixed with thick vegetation has made suppression efforts in some areas challenging. There are currently 110 personnel working on the fire.
