My first encounter with blacks I was maybe 6 years old with my parents in a Sears on Grand Ave. I like most children wandered away maybe 20ft from my mom in the clothing department. I was surrounded by 4-5 black girls older than myself literally a circle around me I was 6 they were bigger and intimidating and I was so afraid again I was a child I don't remember every detail just the absolute fear I felt and even at 6 I understood their intent and it was not good! Thank god my mom came and told them off so quickly. That was my first encounter. My second encounter happened about 3-4 years later. My brother and I rode our bikes to Benton park as it was just across the street on Jefferson Ave on way home we stopped at confectionary like always to spend our pocket change. When we went into store laid our bikes out front like always once in there were a half dozen black kids our age quite surprising at the time they left about when we came in. We bought our Chico sticks came out to our bikes being ridden off heading north down Jefferson to the black part of town. I grew up in St. Louis! Desegregation was forced upon me as a child. I was bussed to black neighborhoods before my parents enrolled me in the magnet school system which was 50% white at least still bussed to black neighborhood allegedly with the smartest blacks as my peers. No longer allowed to go to school with my friends and neighbors. While waiting to be accepted based on my testing I was forced to go to Mullanphy middle school on the black side of tower grove park with other neighborhood kids as it was based on zip codes it seems. I was in the seventh grade mind you only around white kids never in a fight or hit. Within first week there me a couple of other girls I knew were enjoying the nice weather when a red rubber ball bounced over by us you know the kind they have in gym class etc. well it literally bounced right to me and I caught it and before I c ould even decide what to do with it I was punched in the face my eye specifically without a word being spoken. I was in shock my friends were in shock. I mean 3 girls just standing there out of blue larger older black boy punches me like I've never to this day been hit in the face then he left with the ball like it was nothing. My parents did not send me back to Mullanohy I missed nearly 2 weeks of school until accepted in magnet system. I feel whatever high school experience was supposed to be was robbed from me. Even the smartest black are very different than the smartest whites! Those are my first and earliest memories of blacks. There have been limited others as an adult but not nearly impactful as those memories taught me to stay away from them!
