Key Takeaways from CPDP Data Protection Day 2025 After a successful second edition of CPDP Data Protection Day, co-organised by @CPDPconferences , the @coe and @EU_EDPS, it is worthwhile looking back at the proceedings to elaborate on some key takeaways from the panels and keynotes. Although the conference was themed around new mandates, there was also much emphasis on continuity for data protection throughout the day. Broadly speaking, these took two forms: 1️⃣ Continuity of purpose 2️⃣ Continuity of institutions While new political mandates are taking shape, continuity remains crucial. Discussions emphasised: 💡 Defending democracy against tyranny requires active participation in and interaction with institutions that safeguard democratic rights. 💡 The conference opened for fresh perspectives and discussions around new technologies, we cannot escape the fact that policy and legislation lag behind technological innovations.While neuroscience-related risks were explored in depth, challenges posed by quantum sensing and quantum technologies need urgent attention. ❗ The Complexity of EU Digital Legislation Industry voices strongly emphasised that data protection often remains a complex subject, perplexing even the most knowledgeable lawyers and politicians. ❗ The Need for a Multidisciplinary Perspective The mandate of data protection has evolved to the protection of democracy and of a wide set of fundamental rights beyond privacy, the question of its broader relevance to society must also be studied, influenced and promoted by a wide variety of agents.  As Professor Jo Pierson highlighted, the social sciences can clarify how to make laws more actionable. Broad perspectives are what CPDP is about, and it is why we as a community will continue to bring different voices together in a spirit of critical, multidisciplinary and knowledgeable interactions. A huge thank you to EDPS and the European Commission for hosting this edition, which welcomed 400+ in-person participants and many more online. We look forward to the challenges that are coming our way and will be glad to work with the new Data Protection Supervisor once they have taken office, or to continue our successful, long-standing collaboration with Supervisor Wojciech Wiewiorowski. Follow Evgueni Boev, @itxaso, @FusterGloria, @NathalieLaneret and @maxschrems in a conversation moderated by @TetsuwanAstro. This panel delves into the essence and core purpose of data protection, emphasising the fundamental values and societal interests these laws serve to protect while also reflecting on how they can be defended in the face of modern challenges. Why should we care about data transfers, targeted advertising, abuse of sensitive data, or automated decision-making? How can data protection protect individuals and society? How do we define the harm when even recent decisions of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) highlight the difficulties in quantifying damage when privacy is breached? While exploring these questions, the panel will remind us what the essence of data protection law is and why it is still relevant in a world of data-driven technologies. CPDP - Data Protection Day 2025 "Forging the Future: Reinventing Data Protection?" Follow @bendrath , @HielkeHijmans , Karolina Mojzesowicz, @NoraNiLoideain and @johnnyryan in a conversation moderated by @gabrielazanfir. Whereas the digital word is subject to constant change, so are the laws that govern it. Recent legislative developments have led to a complex legal landscape which may be difficult to navigate at times. This panel aims to stimulate reflection on the role of data protection within this dynamic regulatory environment. It also aims to explore possible alternative approaches to the application of data protection in an era of rapid technological advancement. Key areas of focus will include: regulatory models best suited to keep pace with technological innovation; learnings from newer regulatory approaches such as DSA, DMA, and Al Act, exploring new paradigms for data protection (e,g., should consent, transparency and user control be redefined?). The panel aims to chart a course for the future of data protection that is both robust and flexible, navigating through the challenges discussed during the day. The panellists will discuss whether we still are on track to achieve the main objectives of data protection regulation without avoiding this important question: should the GDPR be reopened and why?
