Under the imminent legislation, New Zealand entities with income over $20 million p.a. must submit annual reports of the risk of labour abuse in their supply chains. A public register of the disclosure statements will be established, and a penalty regime implemented.

However, disclosure legislation is just one step in our efforts, and considerable work remains to tackle modern slavery in supply chains. The introduction of due diligence legislation is a crucial next step.

The New Zealand Government has today announced it is drafting modern slavery legislation. This is a significant milestone for New Zealand, which aligns us with other countries (e.g., Australia and the UK).
