Barriers to not prescribing biologics for severe asthma: time to counsel, need for education on new therapies, fear of term "biologic", experience limitation. Learn from colleagues and engage in shared decision making. Paucity of data in peds but research ongoing! #CSACI23 #NREP

Excellent talk by Dr. Zuraw highlighting the role of early next generation sequencing as an integral and mostly cost effective part of the angioedema work up. Patients with a strong family history and negative genetic testing does not rule out HAE with normal C1 inhibitor.

- Unpredictable - Rare - Painful swelling attacks in different parts of the body - Delays in diagnosis/ misdiagnosis - limited treatment options These are some factors contributing to the huge psychosocial burden of illness for hereditary angioedema #NREP #CSACI2023 #HAE

Spleen Tyrosine Kinase (SYK) plays a important role in adaptive and innate immunity. SYK variants have been identified in patients with arthritis, dermatitis, colitis and predisposition to lymphoma. Studies have shown SYK inhibitors and ASCT as potential treatments. #NREP #CSACI

Severe eosinophilic airway disease in STAT3 loss of function is driven by IL-5, so targeting eosinophils with biologic treatment can be an effective treatment approach. Biologics can reduce the respiratory tract infection burden but the immune defect remains #CSACI2023 #NREP

Canada has shortage of plasma and IVIG and the supply along with not having uniform Indication for using IVIG across Canada is part of barriers to this life saving therapy. #CSACI2023 #NREP

Interesting talk by Dr. Mazer on adherence and barrier to immunoglobulin replacement therapy: Canada is 2nd biggest use per capita of IVIG following behind US, however Canada does not fractionate own product and rely on Europe and US for IVIG products. #CSACI2023 #NREP

Did you know? Every 1 year delay in diagnosing Common Variable Immunodeficiency has been associated with a 4-5% increase in the risk of death. This further underscores the importance of early diagnosis and treatment towards successful patient outcomes! 🧬 #CSACI2023 #CVID

Super interesting talk on Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE) by Dr. M. Gupta. Did you know that signs/symptoms of EoE can be discordant with the degree of histological changes, and therefore endoscopy with biopsy is the gold-standard for ongoing surveillance of EoE? #CSACI2023 #NREP

A lot of learning happening during CSACI NREP session on hereditary alpha tryptasemia thanks to Dr Lyons! Did you know that the most common cause (over 90 percent) of an elevated serum tryptase encountered clinically is hereditary alpha tryptasemia?! #csaci2023 #nrep

Dismissal of risk and lack of understanding from others contribute to the lower health-related quality of life in caregivers for children with food allergy. Advocating for these families is one way we can help make a difference! #CSACI2023
