This is a fascinating paper by @Kate_SdE et al on India's signalling: "to avoid provoking China, build supportive but caveated relations with the United States." journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/13… It is a clever paper, with layers underneath the text that interested readers can unpeel.

🥁New article! Notice how 🇮🇳 rarely explicitly criticizes or even names 🇨🇳 in diplomatic speech? Well @RaphaellesK & I have a theory for that. Our new @BritJPIR article draws on language pragmatics to argue that 🇮🇳 often signals via a mode of indirect speech called "implicature"
