India’s vast coal reserves could potentially help reduce its dependence on LPG. China is already doing it. Can India follow suit?
DME, a cleaner substitute, can be scaled for domestic use, but only if India shifts to producing methanol, the key ingredient, instead of importing it, says Dr. @AshishLele3467 (@csir_ncl). In conversation with @govindethiraj, he explains how India can do that. Listen in!

“The highlight of this year’s Foundation Day of "Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council" #BIRAC is that, as per the India Bio Economy Report #IBER2025 released today, India achieves a quantum rise in bio-economy, touching the figure of 195.3 billion U.S. dollars. This is significant , particularly because before the Modi government came in 2014, India's bio-economy stood at mere 10 billion U.S. dollars, which means that there has been a nearly 20 times hike in just over a decade.
This milestone is in keeping with the collective realisation that the next industrial revolution is going to be biotechnology driven and the entire paradigm of economic growth is going to shift from IT to majorly Biotech and, when that happens, India would have already taken a lead.
Similarly, while in 2014 the number of biotech #StartUps in this country was just around 400, today it is nearly 12,000, which is again quite a record.
While congratulating the entire fraternity and the industry for this synergised effort, it is important to mention that, this success story has been possible primarily because of an enabling milieu and patronage provided by PM Sh @NarendraModi, who not only made sure that India was among the first few countries in the world to launch a dedicated Biotechnology policy called #BioE3, but he also made it a point to publicly announce this in his Independence Day address of 2025, calling upon the youth of the country to explore the biotechnology sector to discover a bright future for themselves”.

#WATCH | Pune, Maharashtra: Indian scientists developed DME (Dimethyl Ether) technology as an alternative to LPG.
Dr Thirumalaiswamy Raja, Chief Scientist at CSIR-NCL, says, "...Two decades ago, we started this kind of chemistry to attain DME in a cost-effective and legally sustainable way. With this lab, we made it all happen. This was inaugurated by the then Science and Technology Minister, Dr Harshvardhan. We developed syngas to methanol, and syngas to direct DME for using syngas, because CO+H2 from wherever it comes (NG, natural gas, biomass, etc.). Later, we focused on methanol to DME, an indirect route... We developed a catalyst and obtained around 5 patents for this catalyst..."
He adds, "We built it to an industry standard from the beginning. From scratch, we focused on industry needs... We are working with industrial partners, including one in Pune, for a 250 KPD plant. Our fabricator is also based in Pune and is ready to deliver shortly to meet India's needs. We are collaborating with different PSUs, including IOCL, the biggest refinery of Indian Oil Corporation Limited. They validated our process successfully. Now, we are talking with ONGC, which is willing to set up a 2.5-ton-per-day plant (about 2,500 kilograms per day). Once it’s validated with a semi-commercial demonstration plant, it can be scaled to any size. We are ready to roll..." (15.03)
