The pursuit of school safety and security has clearly intensified the longstanding marginalization of minority youth, subjecting them to increased criminalization, harmful educational outcomes, and negative developmental impacts.👇🏿

Consequently, schools began to adopt approaches similar to those used in the criminal justice system to handle both serious and minor student misbehavior.

Schools were not immune to the ‘tough-on-crime’ policies of the 1980s and 1990s, and the lasting effects of those punitive measures continue to shape educational disciplinary systems.👇🏿
