He then entered a residential treatment centre in Halifax where he stayed for a year. As Cultural Safety Coordinator at Mainline Needle Exchange, Morty uses his lived experience every day, doing peer support, educational workshops, outreach, policy work, and more.

Morty struggled with substance use and homelessness in his teens living in New Brunswick. At 18, he hitchhiked to Halifax where he stayed in various men's shelters. As a result of his addiction, Morty was hospitalized for liver and heart complications for several months.
