Truly honored to be featured in My Green Pod Magazine as we celebrate this year’s International Women’s Day. The article explores how we are redefining wildlife protection through our work at Conservation Through Public Health. Many thanks to Neel Zaver, host of Our Altered World on UK Health Radio, for shining a spotlight on our conservation efforts with the mountain gorillas and local communities. Half of our Village Health and Conservation Team volunteers are women! Every investment in women has improved their lives as well as the lives of those around them, which in turn has helped the mountain gorillas!

Engaging communities is crucial for the success of conservation efforts. When families have access to health services and sustainable income, pressure on forests decreases, and the mountain gorillas are safer.

Many of the greatest threats to wildlife are preventable. Disease transmission. Poaching. Habitat loss. Climate stress. CTPH strengthens community health & sustainable livelihoods to address these risks before they escalate. Support this work ctph.org/ctph-donation-… #WWD2026

This year’s World Wildlife Day theme reminds us that forests house medicinal and aromatic plants that sustain wildlife, support communities, regulate climate, and promote biodiversity. Help us continue our work and give to mountain gorillas today. ctph.org/ctph-donation-…

When we protect mountain gorillas, we protect more than a species. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, a mountain gorilla habitat, is one of the most biologically rich forests in Africa.

Can wildlife tourism truly balance conservation, land rights, and profit? Following the recent case in the Maasai Mara, about a high end lodge allegedly being constructed in the path of the wildebeest migration, important questions had to be asked. I am grateful to Al Jazeera for creating space for this critical conversation, and I was honored to contribute to the discussion. Before tourism began in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, it was simply a forest that communities depended on for survival, often through activities that were not sustainable. There were no structured benefits. If ecotourism had not been introduced, it is unlikely that mountain gorillas would be thriving today. On top of creating jobs for the local communities and tourism revenue supporting operations of the National Park, 20% of the park entry fee and $10 from every gorilla permit is shared with the local communities. And local entrepreneurs and businesses have thrived. At Conservation Through Public Health, we believe conservation must never exclude communities. Through our One Health approach, local people are not treated as outsiders but as partners, stakeholders, and direct beneficiaries. This is a model I believe can and should be adapted globally. In my memoir, Walking with Gorillas, I dedicate a chapter titled “Is Tourism a Necessary Evil?” to exploring this issue. I invite you to watch the full conversation here: aljazeera.com/video/the-stre… #WalkingWithGorillas #ResponsibleTourism @AJStream
