Engineers Australia Talk – Modelling Future River Releases in the Upper Canning River Register now for this in-person talk! 📅 Tuesday 17th March 12:00pm - 1:30pm 📍 Engineers Australia Perth Office: Level 10, 77 St Georges Terrace Speaker: Eleanor Sydney, Environmental Officer, DBCA @Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions Presentation: Drawing on a @UWAresearch thesis project that applied the Mesoscale Hydrologic Model (mHM) to explore future river management strategies under climate change. The study simulates how varying river release schedules interact with projected rainfall and temperature trends, examining the volumes of water required to sustain ecological health and cultural values over coming decades. The talk also places the Upper Canning River within a broader context, comparing flow management challenges with other Australian catchments and highlighting the practical implications for water planners and environmental managers. New study reveals impact of extreme heat and drought on jarrah forests Research led by UWA PhD student Huanhuan Wang examined how forests across the South West of Western Australia responded to 2024’s extreme summer heat and drought and found that areas with shallow soils, rocky terrain and limited access to groundwater were most vulnerable. By integrating multiple data sources, the study identified spatial patterns of forest vulnerability that were not apparent from climate data alone. 📖 UWA impact article and link to study published in Environmental Research Letters: uwa.edu.au/news/article/2… #ClimateScience #JarrahForest #ExtremeHeat #Drought #ForestManagement #UWA #WaterScience @SAgE_UWA @UWAresearch @uwanews

💧 WaterSmart Dams – Making Dams Work Again has brought Western Australian growers together to tackle one of agriculture’s biggest challenges: reliable on-farm water supplies and aims to equips farmers with knowledge and water planning tools to make confident water investment decisions. This case study booklet shares the insights from Western Australian growers, from four grower group project partners from within the GGA Network, including @CompassAgAu, Darkan; @SouthernDirtYF, Kojonup; @MADFIG14, Merredin; and the @FGroup57815, Jerramungup. 💡Growers trialed practical solutions including renovating existing dams and catchments, building new dams, and implementing evaporation control methods. 💡 Each case study shares the growers insights into what worked, what didn’t, and what they learned along the way. 👉 Read the full case study to see their perspective, process, results and challenges: gga.org.au/activity/water… This project is jointly funded through the Australian Government’s @Future Drought Fund (FDF) and the Western Australian state government’s @Agriculture Climate Resilience Fund (ACRF), supported by the @Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD), this project equips farmers with knowledge and water planning tools to make confident water investment decisions. #WaterSmartDams #SmartDams
