I had a conversation with a Power 4 college coach who’s been doing this for 25+ years. We were talking about the mentality of high school players during the recruiting process. Here’s what he told me: “What these kids don’t realize is… I don’t care how many followers you have. I don’t care how many home runs you hit in travel ball. I don’t care how many offers you have. I don’t care about your ranking. I don’t care how hard you can hit a ball. I don’t care about your metrics. The only thing I care about is this: Are you going to produce in between those white lines when we play this season?” Then he said something else that hit: “They’ve been so protected that the first time they fail, they quit… or they transfer.” And here’s the part that matters. The biggest development mistake I see? Players don’t plan for failure. They plan for success. They visualize success. They expect success. But they don’t prepare for 0-4. They don’t prepare for getting booed. They don’t prepare for sitting the bench. They don’t prepare for struggling for 3 weeks. So when it happens — and it will — they panic. Instead of executing a pre-made plan, they try to create one while emotional. That never works. Failure is coming. The question is: Did you already decide how you’re going to handle it?

If I was a HS Baseball Player today, these are 3 things I would absolutely do: 1) Own the wt room 2) Level up my rest, recovery, nutrition 3) Play multiple sports

With a 0-0 count if U tell me you’re trying to hit the FB CB SL CH at the same time-Im telling you that you’re 2strike hitting the whole bat-U don’t have to swing why are we trying to hit 95 and 79 at the same time until we have to-that’s my two strike approach COMPETEwCONFIDENCE

Great piece of hitting from 2028 MIF Cason Jones (AL). Stays compact in a quick trigger with fast hands and good balance as he shoots this into RF for a quality knock. Strong bat-to-ball skills throughout the profile as well. @PrepBaseballAL #LDC25

@Lunchboxhero45 @JeffStanek1 @TheCoachHomer “Matters” is probably a bad term, I should have said at what age do y’all think playing against high level players is more necessary than just your local PARD or Select team?

How have youth sports changed in the last 20 years?? We have pushed the “competitive” narrative onto our kids at far too young of an age, before they can really handle it. We have sold our parents on the idea that “if your kid is not playing year round, or for our club team, they are going to get left behind.” We have allowed organizations to corporatize our children’s ability to just GO PLAY a sport. We have allowed them feed off of our egos as parents to buy into the player/state rankings over the actual development of a child. PARENTS, stop dreaming of where your kid is going to play in college or what round they are going to get drafted in. Start dreaming about their potential as human beings to grow up to be healthy, happy, and sturdy humans whose identity is built on being loved for who they are, not what they do.

@JeffStanek1 @Lunchboxhero45 @TheCoachHomer What age do you believe the summer ball matters for kids? 14-17? I mean does it really matter if a 9-12 is throwing hard/soft or hitting great or not? As long as there’s a love or work ethic there.

@ChaseWhitley @Lunchboxhero45 @TheCoachHomer Agreed. That's why latin players are so good, in my opinion. They practice much more than they play. Here, it's all about games games games, and winning plastic rings for the trophy case

@JeffStanek1 @Lunchboxhero45 @TheCoachHomer Have conversations regularly with guys who think their kids are going to get left behind if they don’t play 50 games in spring/summer. It’s not going to change anytime soon unfortunately. Personally, I like practice better than game until teenage years. Gr8 perspective from y’all

I am currently coaching my 7 year old in an 8u community league. It amazes me how seriously some of the coaches take it. Our team stinks - lot of young small kids, not many who can even play catch, etc. We don't win much (keeping score at 8u is another tweet...). But it's like some of these coaches get their jollies from beating a former college coach in an 8u game where their kids are 6" taller than mine, on average. It's gross what youth baseball is about for most people

@nextlevelbb We as coaches have to win the parents so that we can win the kid over.
