Over drinks on Friday night my good friends from the VFW convinced me that not only was it legal for me to wear my old uniform, but that it was my duty to do so. That seeing a normal, successful dad from Cranford wearing the uniform might give some kids the idea that service was obtainable. So today I visited my kids' school, where alongside some Vietnam and Gulf War I vets I walked the halls while the kids stood outside their classrooms, many clapping and holding signs. It was a great experience and I think my friends were spot on. If we want service to be something to aspire to, rather than just something for people who don't have many other options, showing up like this helps. And I'm shocked it still fit! Thanks today to all who have served, and for all who teach young Americans that the military might be worth considering, not just as a last resort.
