Stage 1 treatment usually involves active surveillance because the cancer is small and growing slowly. Still, some people might choose to have treatment if they are younger and willing to accept some side effects in order to cure the cancer. -Mayo Clinic

𝗡𝗜𝗖𝗥𝗔𝗧 𝗕𝗮𝗴𝘀 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 The National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT) has been conferred with an award for Excellence in Cancer Research by the Capital Health Awards Academy. The award was in recognition of the efforts of the Institute in transforming cancer research in Nigeria. Speaking during a brief ceremony at the NICRAT Headquarters in Abuja, the Convener/Founder of Capital Health Awards Academy, Salomey Ejefero, stressed that her organisation has carefully watched the activities of NICRAT since inception, especially, its efforts in building a globally accepted research culture and also expanding the cancer research landscape in Nigeria. According to her, Capital Health Awards Academy decided to recognize the institute after it passed through the scrutiny of several stakeholders who remained unanimous that NICRAT is putting the right structures and building the needed capacity to ensure that Nigeria takes its rightful place in terms of cancer research globally. She commended the NICRAT DG and his team for standing tall despite all challenges and making sure that the Institute is focused in delivering its key mandate leading to unprecedented improvement in cancer awareness, treatment and research. “In recognition of its outstanding contributions to building a cohesive, scientifically rigorous, and collaborative national cancer research ecosystem, NICRAT is hereby honored for its excellence and visionary leadership. “The purpose is to honor this institution and to encourage them to continue to affect the oncology space with the same vigor that they started so that by the time the pioneer DG is done, there will be something that the whole nation will rest on. Let this award push you to do more things than you have done before.” While presenting the award, the former National Coordinator of National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP), at the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Ramatu Hassan, noted that Nigeria has made remarkable progress in the fight against cancer. She applauded the NICRAT Director General, Prof. Usman Malami Aliyu, for working hard to ensure that Nigeria is doing well in cancer prevention, treatment and research. In his remarks after receiving the award, the DG NICRAT, Prof. Malami, appreciated the Capital Health Awards Academy team, noting that all the successes achieved by the Institute since inception was due to the support and encouragement from the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led federal government, the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali-Pate and the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako and other well-meaning Nigerians working in the cancer space. He assured that NICRAT will continue to work hard to ensure that Nigeria gets it right and also dominate the African continent in terms of cancer research. #NICRAT #NCCP #AwardAcademy #FMoHSW #SAGAR
