CM Yaroslavsky has been a rockstar on the issue of construction liability reform. As soon as the bill AB 1903 was introduced, she pledged her full support right away. I hope to see her convince LA to be all-in on this bill as it makes its way through Appropriations and the Senate

The median single-family detached house in Los Angeles is over $940,000. The median condo? $650,000. That’s nearly $300,000 less, so why aren’t we building them? Builders have walked away because a broken process made condos too risky to be worth it. AB 1903 (Wicks) is the fix.

Parking reform lowers the cost of housing. Minneapolis: rents up 1% vs. 14% statewide. Austin: built at nearly triple the national rate. NYC and Chicago still require parking in their most walkable neighborhoods. Time to catch up. @Parking_Reform @GOVERNING

The childcare shortage 🤝 the housing shortage. 4M homes short. 4.2M childcare slots short. 1 in 5 parents put off buying due to childcare costs. Rising rents are pushing out family care providers — the cheapest option. More home choices means more families can afford both.

@aarmlovi @MarcDunkelman @ezraklein @cayimby I've heard that 9,000 units have already been entitled under last year's AB 130. Clean reforms work. Here's our original proposal that we pitched Asm. Wicks. I'm glad her team pushed for a 20 acre max size!

LA's downtown is struggling, but dense mixed-use neighborhoods are outperforming it on retail and transit. A Brookings fellow argues both problems share a root cause: zoning that rigidly separates where people live from where they work. latimes.com/opinion/story/…

Family-sized housing in LA is scarce and expensive, and for millennial parents without generational wealth or property already in the family, the math increasingly points to one conclusion: leave. laist.com/news/housing-h…

SPUR's housing policy director argues San Francisco's fees and affordable housing mandates, each defensible alone, are collectively making projects impossible. Evidence: 74,000 homes in the pipeline, only 4% under construction.

Condos make up just 3% of California's new housing, compared to 38% in Canada. A Terner Center/SPUR report traces the gap to construction defect liability laws that force developers to pay three to four times more for insurance on condos than comparable rentals.
