"It goes without saying, I believe, that if we understood ourselves better, we would damage ourselves less. But the barrier between oneself and one's knowledge of oneself is high indeed" - James Baldwin, 1962

If you read one thing today, read this truth about @SERI_RightsSA, its work, its clients & allies, the vicious threats it has faced for standing up for the rights of poor communities, shared by its leader. (If you are a young lawyer, law student or activist, you could find no better role model than Nomzamo Zondo.) Having been part of the SERI team and leadership remains one of my proudest life chapters, but Nomzamo speaks true when she tells of the toll that it has taken on us all - the online trolling, lies, death threats to SERI staff, and the extreme violence experienced by our clients day after day. Only the solidarity of allies enables SERI's work to continue. And hope.

To quote our counsel, Boda SC for the Appellants, if the decision of the Labour Court is not reversed we run the risk of our 'work spaces becoming sites of silences ..." Judgment was reserved.

At the Appeal court it was argued that the Labour Court completely ignored the context at which the words were uttered. It was untenable - to equate evaluative / genuinely held opinion with hate speech.

The reason we love the beautiful game is that redemption is always within reach. Condemnation from the fans disappears into thin air the moment you make a crucial block, dribble, assist, and importantly score a goal.
