@J_Richardson12 We split our 2 full length cages in half to create 4 stations. We also use our outfield (right next to our cages) to create stations where we hit plyos, mini plyos, mini foam balls, small whiffles, etc. We do circuits with all kinds of differing hitting activities.

@cabney18 What do normal hitting sessions look like? Curious what it looks like? I have 30 guys and 2 cages so always looking for better ways to do things

Why not just throw your lower intensity, mid-week bullpen to live batters? Currently in our build up phase before games, this has allowed for: - Pitchers full control over calling pitches - Catchers get to learn how pitchers like to work - Hitters can manipulate more constraints to work on their game - Pitchers get freedom to work on specific pitches & getting hitters out in different ways, in the real environment

Drawing attention to an athlete’s “mechanics” is poisonous to their ability to perform & develop. Scientific research has shown this for quite some time. Making them aware & self-conscious of whether they are pleasing our movement rules is coach-centered, not athlete-centered.

More simply put…👇🏼 ✅ Emphasizing fixing your “mechanics” = bad for the brain’s circuits to operate at a high level. If your cognitive function is impaired, it doesn’t matter what “mechanics” you have. Common baseball coaching practices are scientifically archaic. 👍🏼 🔗: ⬇️

@BTChristensen Respectfully, it is this exact kind of thinking that gives athletes a complex and inhibits performance. Athletes don’t need to be “fixed”, according to the visual preferences of an evaluator. They need to be free to be creative and move in a variety of ways that work for them.

@cabney18 Sometimes you need to sit down and “repair the nets” before the next time to fish. Time and a place for it for sure. Lot of coaches and gurus over-coach mechanics, but there’s opportunity to fine tune and sharpen.

As a college Head Baseball Coach, the absolute last thing I want my players thinking about while competing in games… ❌ MECHANICS ⚙️ So… what do we do to ensure this isn’t the default in competition?? 👉 We NEVER focus on mechanics in training - ever. I know, it’s wild.

@MavenBaseball Matching what the game’s best do requires acknowledging that the game’s best have wide variance of intra-variability & inter-variability in their effective movement solutions that are context-driven. Claiming to be able to measure these & match them universally is flawed.

Solving hard pitch problems is absolutely the point. ✅ Flawed evaluation is out the window when you can assess and measure against what the game's best players do. From there, matching the right movements (internals) and environments (externals) can create a more robust hitter.

❌ Improving “bat path” = overrated. ❌ Improving “efficiency” = overrated. ❌ Improving “[insert preferred body part]” = overrated. These are all subjective… & overly reliant on a coach’s flawed evaluation. ✅ Spend 📈 time solving HARD pitch problems that mimic the game.

@RPJ1317 Humble + authentically guided self-organization that allows for uniquely-appearing variance, coupled with environments that provide opportunities to connect better with information ->> 🎯

@ChezWhizzz Yep, exactly! That’s where the idea of representative training design or “game-like” training come from. Good call!

And basketball coach! This describes current 🏀 with remarkable accuracy. 🎯 Rehearsal of “dribbling”…👎🏼 Rehearsal of shooting “mechanics”…👎🏼 Rehearsal of “moves” that please the visuals of a coach who claims expertise..👎🏼 It’s no different than a dance recital in actuality.🕺🏼

Regardless of level, most practices are just wasted rehearsals. Lines, on-air reps, scripted movements. Practice isn’t a dance recital. The game is chaotic & unpredictable, yet we train with no decisions, no pressure, no context. Don’t expect game solutions without training them.

Day 14 of 31 In the month of December I am going to drop 31 (1 for each day) personal opinions about the game of baseball. We dont waste time on practicing bunting. We spend valuable time on learning how to mash baseballs over the center field fence. Change my mind!
