Our youth system is beyond broken. We’ve devalued real coaches. Kids aren’t developed, they are overtrained, burned out, forced to specialize early & pressured to win at all costs. Structural change is needed. We don’t teach the game anymore! We promote the game & it’s killing us

Even the poor shooters make 50+%. Why the difference (28% 3pt shooters making 50+%, 40% 3pt shooters making 70+%)? It's not game-like. And if it's not game-like, it won't transfer as well.

Just a reminder as all of these NBA combine & pre-draft shooting drills make their rounds on social media. Every NBA player is a great shooter during their rehearsal… when the shots have very little variability, are self-paced, pre-determined & without any defense or decisions.

Success stories inspire. Failure stories educate. We only hear from winners because losers don’t get to tell their story. Don’t just study who made it, study who didn’t: burnout, ego, injuries, quitting, etc. That’s where real coaching lessons are for players, parents & coaches.

The hard things in life don’t get any easier by waiting until you’re ready. Challenges never go away. Hardships won’t disappear. Obstacles don’t fade. They just sit there festering. Face them. Handle them. Then move on. Nobody is ever ready. Strength comes from doing it anyway!

Sports don’t just end athletic careers. They end identities for a lot of athletes. The years of structure, pressure & validation vanish overnight. If we only build performance, we miss the bigger job: building people who still know who they are after the game ends for themselves.

Players learn by doing. Your practice isn’t a coaching clinic & players don’t need all the information that you know to be effective. Get them going & then observe, ask questions & give feedback, but also give them a chance to find solutions on their own. Less talk. More action!

Combine testing is a waste of time. If you’ve evaluated athletes for years & some “track & field” trials are going to raise or lower their draft status, you really need to look at your evaluation process. These testing methods fail to represent the unpredictability of the game.

Coaches: Trust what you see in a player. Don’t worry about what offers he/she has or hasn’t already gotten. If you like the player & believe he/she will be a good fit for your program, then make the offer. Don’t keep second guessing. Trust your instincts. Usually, that’s enough.

BAD PLAYERS don’t take much seriously. AVERAGE PLAYERS take games seriously. GOOD PLAYERS take practice & games seriously. GREAT PLAYERS take academics, nutrition, warm-ups, ind. work, weight room, conditioning, film, practice & games seriously. ~ @CoachJonBeck

Too many players grow up comfortable. Real growth happens when you compete against players just as talented as you, around coaches who don’t know your name & won’t hand you anything. That’s where daily habits, toughness, consistency & the little things separate serious players.

Oftentimes we pray for the difficult situations in our lives to change, failing to realize that we’re put in those exact situations so that we can make our own changes. Sometimes the most difficult trials lead us to the biggest reward if we’re just willing to trust the process!

Stop blaming your parents, friends, teachers, coaches or “bad luck”. It’s a concept the whiney, pampered, excuse-making, entitled masses will never get: Work!! Busting your butt, breaking a sweat & earning it just flat out feels great. There’s not a better feeling in the world!
