Players: Enjoy your HS playing days. There’s nothing like playing in front of a crowd of your community members, friends & family & playing alongside classmates. The sense of community & school pride is unbeatable. Relish it; rejoice in it; respect it. It’s over before you know.

If your practices look nothing like the game, don’t be shocked when your players can’t perform in it. Stop creating robots with perfect form & zero feel. Build adaptable, decision makers. Scrap the cones & pads. Add defenders. Coach the players, coach the game, not just drills.

Great coaches don’t use players to build a legacy. They use coaching to build people. Anyone can draw up plays, call sets & chase wins. The best coaches build relationships, develop confidence & help players become better teammates, leaders, and humans. That impact lasts longest.

Success leaves clues.” When asked what makes Spain’s youth soccer system so successful, the expert didn’t mention more drills or more instruction. He said: “Meddle less. Let kids play. Let them learn. Let them entertain on their own. Let them be creative.” There’s wisdom in that.

Players: June was a measuring stick for your role/game. July is AAU. With many HS summer games ending, what are the key takeaways & how will you use the rest of your summer? Create a plan. August-November is WORK! Identify the problem, attack the problem. PRIORITIZE DEVELOPMENT!

Real coaching isn’t about plays, it’s about people. It’s not just shaping athletes, it’s building leaders. The best coaches teach grit, character, teamwork & accountability. Those lessons don’t fade after the final whistle-they echo through lives, families, & future generations!

Parents: A cinematic workout isn’t evidence of player development. Camera angles, hype music, cones & pads don’t make players better. Basketball coaches care about one thing: Does the training transfer to the game? Judge coaching by game performance, not social media performance.

Before you lead your players, staff, or team this season, start by leading yourself. Build better habits. Learn. Grow. Apply daily. Coaching is leadership & leadership starts with example. Elevate yourself first. That’s the spark that ignites everything in your program’s culture.

Use the game to teach discipline, trust, grit, honesty, respect & hard work. Let them know you care about more than just how they perform. That kind of impact sticks forever, and they’ll pass it down. Coaching isn’t about the scoreboard. It’s about shaping people. That’s the win!

We need to have a real discussion about what travel ball is costing the average parent. In cities with sky high hotel costs. Parents hang in there.

The 🏀 community deserves much more than an endless list of names. Players deserve honest evaluations. Parents deserve context. Coaches deserve insight. Somewhere along the way, too much recruiting coverage started chasing content instead of serving the game. We can do better!

It’s wild to see how many share the exact same messages but won’t like, repost, follow or engage with others saying those same things. It’s almost as if some people care more about being the voice than advancing the message. Ego is the enemy. The mission is > than the messenger.

Chris Oliver is one of the most generous coaches I've been around. He is a mentor and a friend, and conducts himself with class and professionalism. The value he offers to the coaching community is beyond measure and the product he offers is second to none. @BBallImmersion

Anyone small enough to try to take away his business in order to try to build their own should look themselves in the mirror and question their own professionalism and integrity. A shameful act, especially towards a person that only tries to conduct themselves the right away.
