This is wild. People in *every single one* of the top US allies now think it's better to depend on China than the US. The global balance of power is clearly tilting away from the US and toward China.

Record heat warnings will be hitting the southwest this week, making crossing the desert even more deadly. Last year, more than 112 people were killed in Arizona while crossing the border.

I have two clear messages: First, to the United States & Israel: It’s high time to end this war that is risking to get out of control, causing immense suffering on civilians, with dramatic effects on the global economy & potentially tragic consequences, especially for the least developed countries. Second, my message to Iran: Stop attacking your neighbors, they were never parties to the conflict. The Security Council has condemned these attacks, has ordered them to stop, as it has order to open the Strait of Hormuz. The prolonged closure of the Strait of Hormuz causes enormous pain for so many people around the world who have nothing to do with this conflict. It’s time for the force of the law to prevail over the law of the force. It’s time for diplomacy to prevail over war. My remarks from the European Council in Brussels: un.org/sg/en/content/…

Important message here from @RBReich about rejecting broad assumptions of collective responsibility. Ideally seen as opportunities for solidarity across border, enacting forms of global citizenship. May seem abstract, but vital in these times. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

Yes. This is transparently the plan. It is a destructive and unconstitutional plan. And it can be stopped. It can even be turned into an electoral issue that hurts Trump. But only if we face this now.
Marc E. Elias@marceelias

Trump is setting the stage to claim extraordinary powers to take over the 2026 elections — from banning mail-in voting to imposing new obstacles to voter registration. All of this will be justified on the grounds of national security. democracydocket.com/opinion/trumps…

SCOOP: Last year we reported extensively on Elon Musk’s desire to break into the data pipes of government to bypass the federal bureaucracy. That approach had major consequences — one of which we reveal today: A DOGE bro allegedly made off with volumes upon volumes of highly sensitive Social Security data - the agency’s “crown jewels” - which he downloaded on a thumb drive and brought over to his new job. Me, @MerylKornfield @FedGirlWaPo report on this unprecedented breach: washingtonpost.com/politics/2026/…

Witkoff quoted in article: “I wouldn’t tell you I’m an expert in nuclear, but I’ve learned quite a bit, and I’ve studied it and have read quite a bit about it, and I’m competent to sit at the table and discuss it, and Jared [Kushner] is as well."
ProfTalmadge@ProfTalmadge

This is a technical story with stunning strategic implications. It is quite possible the US launched a massive war because Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff lacked the technical expertise to even understand what the Iranians were offering in negotiations. Absolute idiocy. ms.now/news/trump-ira…

We can enforce our immigration laws and keep communities safe without chaos. Accountability is how you build trust with communities and make sure the system works the way it’s supposed to. Trump won’t hold ICE accountable on his own, so I have a bill to increase transparency, restrict the use of force, require independent investigations, and stop the chaos.

I spoke with @ichotiner about how the U.S. and Israel are waging the war in Iran, how the Trump Administration has dismantled the architecture meant to protect civilians during war, and whether we are headed for a new kind of lawlessness.

In our turbulent times the pushback on women’s rights is in overdrive. But that's what entrenched power does when it feels its grip loosening. We need every voice, every ounce of leadership from the world’s women & girls, while men & boys must stand in solidarity for equality.

Kant: In a democracy, consent is required for war, and the people are reluctant to bring its pain on themselves. The autocrat, “does not suffer in the least from the war, and thus he can make the decision to fight for petty reasons ... without worrying about a justification..."
Kevin Frey@KevinJFrey

Jeffries: "Donald Trump, without justification and without coming to Congress, has gotten America into a Middle Eastern war that we Know will not end well based on what we've already seen in Afghanistan, in Iraq and — for that matter — in Vietnam as well. "

Donald Trump in 2024 - “You are not going to have a war with Iran with me as president.” JD Vance in 2025 - “I certainly empathize with Americans who are exhausted after 25 years of foreign entanglements in the Middle East...but the difference is back then we had dumb presidents.” Pete Hegseth in 2024 - “The foolishness with which we ricocheted around the world intervening, thinking it was in our best interest when really we just overturned the table and created something worse.” These people are against every war except the ones they start. That's what happens when you're surrounded by a bunch of yes men.
