@greg2126 You mock but this is a smart move on their part. They have chosen not to contest the rivalry on the football field -- where they know they will lose -- and instead fight on social media. The kind of tactical genius you expect from the guys who didn't look inside a big ol' horse.

Tl;dr as well-resourced as ND is believe it or not they do not print money, athletics resources have to come from somewhere, and outside of the limited direct revenue the university has control over it has to come from donors, who get to pick where the money goes.

Could a targeted campaign to raise funds for WBB bear fruit? Probably. But that too requires time & resources to execute well. One would hope this was part of Pat Garrity's job description; I suppose we'll see in the coming weeks.

I’ve alluded to this before but I suspect the dynamic at play is less “the athletic department is choosing not to be competitive in sports outside football” and more “ND’s donor base has little appetite for bankrolling multi-million dollar rosters in sports outside football”

ND is making a conscious decision to disinvest from WBB when the sport is exponentially growing. It’s a sad reality that such a storied program has basically decided to stay out of the upper tier of the sport when they have every resource at their disposal to get back to the top.
