This Brian Eno quote about The Velvet Underground has been passed around for decades in various forms, tracing back to a Los Angeles Times story from 1982.⁠ ⁠ In a 2016 interview with Rolling Stone, Eno confirmed that he did in fact say it, and to Velvet Underground frontman Lou Reed himself. It feels especially relevant today. So much of the music industry has been boiled down to data, chart positions, first-week sales, and stats. Cultural impact is harder to measure and sometimes impossible to pinpoint in the moment.⁠ ⁠ Whether it's Dean Blunt, Jai Paul, SOPHIE, Lil B, Burial, Dijon, SpaceGhostPurrp, MF DOOM, or Broadcast, there are so many artists who have quietly shaped new scenes, sounds, and movements in ways you can't sum up neatly with streaming data or social media analytics.⁠ ⁠ The term "your favorite artist's favorite artist" has been thrown around so much these days that it barely means anything, but things like this Eno quote remind you that in some cases, it still carries real significance.⁠ ⁠ Shout out to all the artists who push things forward, inspire their peers, and don't always generate first-week sales numbers to prove it.
