Exciting breaking news for duck hunters: an option for a 3-pintail bag limit has been approved for the 2025-2026 waterfowl season! California Waterfowl led the charge along with our partners to get this model adjusted. We remain steadfast in our pursuit in advocating on behalf of the California duck hunting community. Water has once again been flowing into LKNWR via the Ady Canal for the past 8+ days, to the tune of nearly 200cfs! Unit 2 and 3 have currently reached full capacity (actually beyond that) and the refuge staff has also been supplying water into unit 6A and a couple other units on LKNWR. This is the most flooded acreage present on LKNWR in many years. Great news for waterfowl broods! #saveklamath

Part of our live feed captured a very interesting scene. This hen wood duck removed an egg out of her nest. Duck nesting is common for this species and @birdyologist suggests that this may have been an egg dumped in her nest by another female and mom wasn’t having it. What are your thoughts? Did you know that before 1918, wood ducks were the number one sought-out bird for market hunting? They were hunted so intensely that they were doomed to go extinct. Tune in next week to the Save it for the Blind podcast, where Brian Huber Wood Duck Program Coordinator and Waterfowl Biologist, and Jim Paroli, District Manager and Wood Duck Program Chair, shed light on our Wood Duck Program and why wood duck boxes are so successful. They discuss how the population was boosted by The Migratory Bird Treaty Act in 1918 and how the creation of the wood duck box in 1937 helped boost the population to what it is today. In fact, CWA's Wood Duck Program is set to hatch its one millionth wood duckling this year!
